What About Your Social Network Portability?

Written by Igor Beuker on October 12th, 2007 |

Influential bloggers from the Bay Area (SF) speculate that Google will launch a three dimensional social network still this year. The bloggers also say that this new 3D Social Network will be mashed-up with Google Earth and Google Maps. Rumors also say that Google would plan to release it’s Orkut API’s.

Second Life

Talking about releasing API’s? In many EU countries mobile phone number portability is mandatory by law. If you e.g. switch from Vodafone to T-Mobile, Voda will have to release your mobile number. So consumers can keep their mobile phone number when churning from one Telco to another.

But what about your Social Network Portability? What if you wanted to switch all your photo’s and video’s from one social network to another? How do you move all your content from MySpace to Facebook fast and easy? Or from Hyves to Orkut? It will take me a year right now!

Will the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) or the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) play a leading role in this? Will it be API’s by Google? Will the EU or the Bush Administration make this mandatory in a few years? If not, who will? Any ideas how this will develop?
