Written by Paul van Veenendaal on November 20th, 2007 | 26 comments

Last month we announced the popular holiday viral of OfficeMax would return any time soon. The wait is over! One of the most popular holiday websites from last year has launched again! This time you can upload a headshot of yourself and three other friends or members of your family. The faces are then transplanted onto the bodies of a troupe of festively dressed dancing elves.

Elf Yourself 2.0

Last year the holiday themed viral microsite ElfYourself.com helped contribute to a 20% increase in holiday traffic to OfficeMax’s website. The microsite received over 36 million hits (according to AdAge) in just five weeks, beating Burger King’s Subservient Chicken (19 million in one year) and CareerBuilder’s Monk-E-mail (9 million in eight months) both of which are continuously held up as the benchmark for viral success.

MyFootballClub Buys Stake In Ebbsfleet United

Written by Igor Beuker on November 20th, 2007 | no comments

One of my first items at ViralBlog was about the united consumers initiative MyFootballClub. Since I like soccer and web2.0 I immediately supported MyFootballclub and became a paying member.

Last week I got this e-mail from MyFootballClub announcing: MyFootballClub has agreed a deal in principle to purchase a controlling stake in Ebbsfleet United FC. Placed 9th in the Conference, Ebbsfleet United FC is one promotion from reaching the Football League for the first time in its history.

Ebbsfleet United FC’s head coach Liam Daish commented: “As a football fan, I think the MyFootballClub idea is fantastic. And as the coach, I look forward to the challenge of working with thousands of members to produce a winning team. Assistant Alan Kimble and myself are 100% committed to making this work”.

Facebook Gears Up Social Ad Strategy?

Written by Igor Beuker on November 20th, 2007 | no comments

Social media is hotter than ever before. Everybody around the globe is talking about the rapid growth of phenomenon social network Facebook. But most large social networks and video portals reply poor if you do an advertising request per e-mail. Will these new players grab a large chunk of the online advertising budgets?

Will Facebook, MySpace and other social-networking sites transform advertising? Yes sir, says Mark Zuckerberg, who is 23 and the boss of Facebook, a popular social-networking website. Standing in front of about 250 mostly middle-aged advertising executives on November 6th, he announced that Facebook was offering them a new deal.

“For the last hundred years media has been pushed out to people,” he said, “but now marketers are going to be a part of the conversation”. Using his firm’s new approach, he claimed, advertisers will be able to piggyback on the “social actions” of Facebook users, since “people influence people”.

Since Microsoft bought a 1.6% stake in Facebook for $240 Million, Zuckerberg’s social advertising strategy must make sense? Share us your thoughts about social advertising.

For every correct answer the game donates ten rice grains to the World Food Program. The runner up spot is for OBI. The viral video of construction market OBI.de is a huge success in Germany with over 4 million views in just three weeks time. And the viral is an international success as well. CollegeHumor’s 24: The Unaired 1994 Pilot completes this week’s top 3. A hilarious spoof of the television thriller 24, which goes back ten years in time. We see how the cast deals with difficult situations using 1994 technology.

Dutch Cops Arrest Habbo Hotel Robber?

Written by Igor Beuker on November 16th, 2007 | 4 comments

Dutch capital Amsterdam is globally famous for it’s coffee shops and window shopping at the red light district. But Amsterdam cops do not tolerate theft in their city. Dutch cops arrested a 17 year old boy for virtual theft in Habbo Hotel, the virtual child community.

The 17 year old robber was arrested this week for stealing virtual furniture (with a value of 4.000 Euros!) from the Dutch Habbo Hotel. The cops are also hearing 4 other 15 year old boys for similar cyber crimes in Habbo.

Legal problem is that virtual theft does not exist under Dutch law. But the 17 year old thief is being charged with hacking and fencing. So don’t say I did not warn you: in Amsterdam hash and hookers are legal, but committing a virtual crime, will make you do time!

The Dutch Habbo Hotel has 500.000 active members. Habbo Hotel is active in 29 countries, counts 7 Million active members worldwide and sells credits to it’s users each month for approximately 3 to 4 Million Euros!! With the credits children can buy e.g. virtual furniture to pimp their rooms. 25 Habbo credits value 4,75 Euros. What do you think about this arrest? Share us your thoughts!
