This week’s Viral Friday #1 position goes to Adbakery with Sure Lock - A True Poo Story. Do you have a great ad or marketing idea? Then put it on ‘idea shop’ Adbakery.com. Last September Adrian Parks posted his video “Sure Lock: A True Poo Story”. And even in his wildest dreams he couldn’t guess the video would gain over 4.4 million views on YouTube and Break. The runner up spot is for Is Europe A Country?. In this clip, taken from American television quiz ‘Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?’, we see American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler who has to answer the extremely difficult question “Budapest is the capital of what European country?”. The singer doesn’t have the answer to the question and asks 5th grader Nathan to help her. Human Super Soaker completes this week’s top 3. The video of an African male spewing 1.5 liters of water in an empty bottle causes several discussions on the internet. Is it real or is it a fake?

X-Mas 2007: Time For Some Social Shopping?

Written by Igor Beuker on December 13th, 2007 | no comments

It’s almost X-Mas and consumers around the globe will spend billions and billions buying food and gifts. If consumers need extra money to shop till they drop, they can visit eBay Neigborhoods, social lending sites like Zopa, other Peer2Peer Banks or Virgin Money.

Social shopping leverages the Wisdom of Crowds principle by structuring word-of-mouth input around shopping. Wikipedia defines social shopping as ‘a method of e-commerce in which consumers shop in a social networking environment’. Some sites that offer socializing with your prospects and customers to provide increased interaction and sales are StyleFeeder, Kaboodle and ThisNext.

See why social shopping is great viral marketing at heart in this ABC News interview with ThisNext CEO Gordon Gould.

And for some shopping at trusted brands and retailers, visit Epinions, Trusted Opinion or BizRate first. Find more tips to tap into social shopping at Heidi Cohen’s great article at ClickZ.

Brands Embrace Conversational Tracking?

Written by Igor Beuker on December 11th, 2007 | 2 comments

Some consumer brands finally seem to understand some important trends: We should act more customer centric. We should embrace social media. We should shout less through interrupting ads. We should make our ads very relevant or much more entertaining. And last but not least, we should start listening to consumers.

Is this the reason why conversational tracking companies have a great future and raise money easily? We have been running BuzzLogic for over a year now. And we’ve been selling reports with our advice to many consumer brands around the globe rather easy. Other conversational tracking software from Visible Technologies we’ve tested is also great.

A new conversational tracking player Scout Labs, again based in the SF Bay Area, has entered the market. Rookies can start creating their own brand watch list with free tools like Technorati and Nielsen BuzzMetrics.

Whatever technology or software you use, listening to consumers and becoming more customer centric is a shift of mind! Share us your thoughts about customer centric brands or your case study improving a brand by using conversational tracking software. Read more about conversantional tracking at TechCrunch.

Virgin Does It Again - Branson Is A Genius

Written by Daan Jansonius on December 10th, 2007 | 3 comments

Sir Richard Branson is a great hero of mine. Besides coming across as a decent guy who cares, he is also a brilliant marketeer and highly successful entrepreneur. And we love blogging about him

When he decided to have a go at the airline business people were always going to take notice and he was always going to change things. If only because the other airlines made him feel like he was on one of his life threatening ballooning trips again. Great service is a Virgin trademark. As is their witty and extraordinary marketing.

I’m sure most people have flown on a plane and are familiar with the in flight instructions. They are a drag for both the customer and flight attendant, no one really pays attention and if push came to shove most people would probably fail to recall any of the instructions in case of an actual emergency. As this was never seen as a big deal and even ignored by a lot of people it stands out when it’s been changed. That’s what makes this video so good, they changed something people didn’t expect to be changed.

It’s a typical case of slapping your forehead and saying to yourself “Why didn’t I think of that?”.

Although I do think the idea is excellent and extremely innovative, I do feel they could have executed it slightly better. What do you think?

Disclaimer: Before being labeled a Virgin fan boy I would like to set the record straight (pun unintended).Virgin and Sir Richard Branson are great, but not flawless. For example, I had an interview for a placement and they didn’t hire me. See, everyone makes mistakes. Even Sir Richard.

Bollywood Goes Viral - Arranged Marriage

Written by Daan Jansonius on December 10th, 2007 | 1 comment

This video has been around for a while, but I only just saw it today after it got e-mailed to me by VeryFunnyAds.com.

It’s a television ad for South African television broadcaster DSTV, which depicts a scene which is stereotypical Indian. A young, beautiful woman is hitched up with a big geek. But thankfully DSTV provides options, so she uses her TV remote to turn the geek into the perfect husband (but only after turning him into Elvis and James Bond first!).

I think this is a great example of a company understanding ‘new marketing’. First of all, their product offer diversity and options and the commercial plays into these two crucial elements of the company’s offering. Whether or not they actually provide what they claim (SKY does the same, but also charges an extortionate amount of money for it for example) is besides the point. The viral is funny, grabs the attention and gets the message across well.

Well done DSTV!

Comic Duo Circoripopolo Goes Airtistique

Written by Paul van Veenendaal on December 10th, 2007 | no comments

Belgian comic duo Circoripopolo launched about a one and a half year ago the silent short film ‘Circoripopolo Goes Airtistique‘. The two virtual comedians use some fascinating javascript magic to scale your browser window. I find it beautiful how they synched everything together.

Sit back and watch what the two guys from Belgium do to your browser. Don’t touch your mouse until the show is over! (Source: X-PRIME)

CNN Video Interview: How Video Goes Viral

Written by Igor Beuker on December 10th, 2007 | 4 comments

Okay, it might seem a bit strange a 22 year old student is being called CEO or can’t mention specific examples of succesful virals seeded by his company.

But in the CNN video interview below, The CoMotion Group’s CEO Dan Ackerman Greenberg tells how viral videos don’t grow accidentally and need help in the creational process and social media optimization.

Things that leading viral companies like GoViral and ViralTracker have discovered many years ago. And have proved their skills with viral case studies and outstanding technology.

I do agree with Ackerman that the tremendous growth of search points out that social media optimization could look at a profitable future. And seeding is more than uploading a TV commercial to YouTube. Also see the extended post of Ackerman at TechCrunch.

Cillit Gang Bang XXX Rated Viral Spoof

Written by Igor Beuker on December 9th, 2007 | 1 comment

Some brands and it’s commercials seem to be very appealing to spoofs. Lately, I have seen many spoofs of the Dove Onslaught viral commercial.

After this Cillit Bang spoof with Barry Scott, Cillit Bang had to swallow another. In above spoof Cillit Gang Bang is cleaning all dirty xxx rated left overs. It seems that an adult party was held here?

Why are some specific brands the target for spoofs? That’s what I really would like to know…Is it because their TV commercials are so irritating? Help me out…
