this discussion somehow reminds me of monty python's 'and now for something completely different'.
it starts with answering the initial question, then suddenly takes a hard left (or right, depending on who you're voting for ;)...

so, getting back on track:
are all dutch people anti-american?
who knows.
is vnu media anti-american and thus two-faced by making a spoof of obama's speech?
i doubt it.

i think they use obama because let's face it, he's simply a brilliant sales person, as are all good politicians (a quality pretty much lacking in holland). the 'yes we can' video by will-i-am probably 'converted' a lot of people that hadn't decided yet who to vote for. why? because his speech is mesmerizing. you hear his voice and words...and you're sold. if that isn't sales, i don't know what is.

yes, there's no 'yes we can' culture in the netherlands. but it's not aimed at 'the dutch'. it's aimed at dutch 'sales people'. important distinction, me thinks.

i also think it's a rip off. but as you probably gathered from my lengthy response... a good rip off.

have a good one. arnhem ligt vlakbij nijmegen.

Having health insurance and quality of care are two different issues. The quality of care in the Netherlands is not the best. To answer your question, most Americans can probably find Iraq on a map. Some Dutch can't find Arnhem.

I really get tired of the anti-American sentiment. Then you want to rip off an American speech. Tja, goedzo.

I just don't hope the 'mud throwing' mentality from the US political campaigns ever reach Europe!

If I look at the 60 Million people in the US that have no health insurance... and look at the Dollar vs. Euro rate, it will be very tough and rough times for US politicians coming years!

The domestic thinking in the US and foreign politics in the US are pretty scary sometimes. I wonder if the average American can point out Irak at the world map.. or if they know where Europe is?

If the US will not change it's polical approach dramatically, the US might be looked at as a 3rd world country soon, and will become part of the EU program for poor countries...

Yes, it's a cheesy ripoff. There is no "yes we can" culture in the Netherlands. There is only the tall poppy syndrome and "doe normaal" culture.
