The Scrabulous Merry Goes Rond Continues

Written by Daan Jansonius on April 9th, 2008 | 4 comments

Earlier we reported that EA and Hasbro teamed up to battle Facebook application Scrabulous. Apparently we only scratched the surface of the issue at the time as the whole situation is turning into a situation which would make the script writers of the ‘Bold & The Beautiful’ blush. It’s the company version of a Jerry Springer episode.

Merry go round

The game was created by two software developing brothers, Rajat and Jayant Aganwalla, from Calcutta. However, they created the game without consent form the copyright owners. Which belongs to Hasbro. Or is it Mattel? Actually, Hasbro owns the rights in North America, Mattel in the rest of the world.

Photosharing Mogul Flickr Launches Flickr Video

Written by Igor Beuker on April 9th, 2008 | 8 comments

Is the world’s largest interactive photo platform Flickr attacking online video mogul YouTube? Since today Flickr users can add video clips alongside their photos, a much requested and much anticipated feature that has been promised for over a year.

Flickr

Flickr is effectively turning the photosharing site into more of a YouTube-type experience - but there is a twist. Adding video is now possible, but Flickr has chosen to aim for a different approach than the current videosharing sites.

To make sure that the company does not get into trouble with copyrighted material or long video’s, there is a limit in place that prevents users to upload videos of more than 90 seconds in length. Additionally, there is a 150 MB maximum file size - and you have to be a paying Pro-user.

Do you understand Flickr’s move? Let us know!

Free Southpark For All

Written by Daan Jansonius on April 6th, 2008 | 2 comments

For years Southpark has been one of the most viewed and downloaded TV series on the internet. And none of it was filling the pockets of the show’s creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. So alongside with the network which airs the episodes, Viacom, they have decided to offer them online. For free!

Southpark

All episodes will be offered free of charge, but there will be ads during the episodes. The idea was raised last November, but has finally been executed.

The creative minds behind the show, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, have used the latest episode to express their feelings towards the latest operation. They also took the opportunity to ridicule the Writer’s strike of last year. Script writers are compared to Canadians who are going on strike, simply because they want more money. They suggest the money they receive could come from new internet revenues. Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Butters decide to create a viral video in hope of generating revenue, which can then be given to the Canadians.

Cafeteria Google vs New Restaurant Facebook

Written by Igor Beuker on April 1st, 2008 | 10 comments

As former CMO, former IAB CEO and last 4 years as digital agency MD, I have really experienced the power of Google. Google has disrupted marketing strategies, neutralized monopolies of large brands with huge marketing budgets and has offered small brands opportunities to compete and win.

Then why do I call Google the Cafeteria of the internet? Simply because people visit Google for a quick snack! They enter the cafeteria, drop their coin, grab the snack and leave again. It all happens in just 15 seconds!

Let me explain why I call Google the cafeteria of the internet and Facebook the new and trendy restaurant.

Are social networks, blogs, forums, communities and video portals (together called: social media) the next step after the search decade? No, I think Google will stay powerful for brands. But not for branding!
