Nokia N-Gage: Viral Films & FIFA 08 Giveaways

Written by Igor Beuker on August 12th, 2008 | 6 comments

To further promote their N-Gage next generation mobile gaming service, Nokia is giving away 120.000 FIFA 08 licenses to any UK resident in possession of a compatible Nokia device, until the end of August 2008. See one of the N-Gage viral videos Guy in Bathrobe below. Listen to the guy’s girlfriend in the tube….

In a bid to raise awareness of both their new gaming service and their mass FIFA 08 license giveaway, Nokia released today a series of CCTV-style films documenting the amusingly absorbing effect of mobile FIFA 08. Other of the other videos in this campaign is called Lucky Seat.

Shot undercover on London’s tube network, each of these videos capture the bemused reactions of passengers witnessing a man so engrossed in his game that he does anything in order to avoid any disruption to his match.

The aim of these short films is to drive viewers to N-Gage Micro Site, a CCTV-bank-style site where you can watch any of these six videos at your leisure. From here you can download N-Gage, buy a Nokia N95 8gb or, if you already have the N-Gage application on your mobile, go straight to download your free FIFA 08 license.

Video Ads Gain 22%, Static & Search Ads Lose

Written by Igor Beuker on August 11th, 2008 | 4 comments

JupiterResearch recently reported that, even with a lousy economy, the amount of money spent on online advertising should continue to grow at double-digit rates all the way through to 2013. A no brainer. Since online should do better than offline advertising because the accountability it offers – the ability to track its’ effectiveness is much better than with other types of advertising.

Total online ad spending is expected to increase about 20 % in 2008. Until 2013, Jupiter expects total online ad spending to have an annual growth rate of 13%. By comparison, offline advertising is only expected to grow 4% over the same period. Print advertising will shrink, TV will stabilize and mobile will make up for the overall loss.

Search advertising will still be the largest category, but according to Jupiter’s research the growth rate for search advertising will slow because of an “inability to tap into small local advertisers and a steady maturation of the paid search market.”

This is so logical. Already, Google is at 71% share of search (Compete) and 85% share of ad dollars (Covario). That means that marketers are paying more and more for clicks. If costs per click continue to spiral upward buying it just won’t be cost effective anymore and eventually people will pull back on their pay-per-click budgets.

Sporting Portugal In Viral Hall Of Fame 2008

Written by Igor Beuker on August 5th, 2008 | 2 comments

Sporting Portugal made the Marketing Sherpa Viral Hall of Fame 2008 with an interactive web ad, that made Sporting coach Paulo Bento call you back saying: come to the stadium, we need you. It reminded me of Playertalk, a similar mobile concept that Arsenal and O2 UK already launched many years ago.

Sporting Portugal created a website that let users submit their name and telephone number to become part of an interactive ad. A video showing a well-known soccer coach stressing out in a locker room ended with a phone call to the submitted number with the coach encouraging the visitor to come to the stadium because “the team needs you.”

The idea attracted plenty of blog coverage and more than 610,000 people to the site in two weeks. The all-time record for season ticket sales was shattered on the first day of the season. The creative agencies were Draftfcb and eStara. The campaign was targeted at fans and was launched August 2007.

Diageo, the largest multinational beer, wine and spirits company in the world, has publicly distanced itself from the below sexy Guinness UGC viral that has broken on YouTube. Almost 350.000 people watched the video before Diageo instructed YouTube to remove the fake viral commercial.

A Guinness spokesman said: “Please be assured that Guinness is in no way associated with this video, and has approached YouTube to have it removed. We are proud of our brands, and our commitment to responsible marketing, and this is not how we want our brand portrayed.” Read the article at UTalkMarketing.

More discussions about the UGC viral commercials at Brand Republic and at Neville Hobson’s blog.

Question is, would or wouldn’t you launch such a viral commercial if you were a brand manager at Guinness? Why would you? Or why not? And how do you rate this viral?
