China’s 2008 Most Popular Google Terms Out!

Written by Igor Beuker on December 15th, 2008 | 7 comments

Awkward feeling: I am writing an item about social and uncontrolled media, but it’s about China, freedom of speech (Tibet?) and Google (don’t be evil?). Mixed emotions. However, professionally I wanted to let you know, what Chinese asked most to Google in 2008. You might be surprised…

And although the firewall around the Chinese internet is 10 times larger than the Chinese wall itself, can you image the number of search queries that are done per day in China? Servers that are load balanced to the max and still smoking hot by the number of daily requests…

YouTube Gains Views, But Loses Market Share

Written by Igor Beuker on December 13th, 2008 | 2 comments

The latest online video audience numbers, released today by ComScore, are sort of a good news/bad news scenario for Google’s YouTube. YouTube gained 5.4 Billion views in July 2008, but its share went down almost 10% over the same period. How can that be?

It’s a factor of more people are watching more videos generally, but while total video viewing is up, certain sites are benefiting more than others.

84% Of Consumers Say: Corporate Blogs Suck

Written by Igor Beuker on December 10th, 2008 | 4 comments

Well, this isn’t the most inspiring news to brands. But do neglect this item and do not hire a very skilled social media marketing agency. Just go out bragging and bribing social influentials within the social media space and you will kill your biggest asset: your brand!

This visual was used with the permission of my friend Michael Moon – CEO Gistics.com

“Only one in six consumers (just 16%) trust company blogs,” points out WOMM-U speaker alumnus Rohit Bhargava of (member company Ogilvy PR). In other words, 84% of corporate blogs today probably suck.”

Scrabble Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Written by Paul van Veenendaal on December 9th, 2008 | no comments

The popular board game Scrabble, which is owned by Hasbro in the US and Canada and by toy maker Mattel elsewhere, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a special website, a special limited edition and a stop-motion video.

Scrabble celebrates 60th anniversary with stop-motion

In 1938 an out-of-work architect named Alfred Mosher Butts created, in the midst of the Great Depression, the game as a variation on an earlier word game he invented called Lexiko. Discouraged by poor sales, Butts relinquished the game in 1947 to James Brunot, who made minor changes and renamed it Scrabble, registering its trademark in 1948.

Iran: A Nation Of Bloggers

Written by Matthijs Roumen on December 8th, 2008 | 3 comments

Liberty of speech isn’t a common good in every country. Take Iran as an example. Talking about your visions or feelings is not allowed in all cases. Especially when its about subjects such as politics, human rights and love.

What will happen if you give these people – who share a strong feeling of communicating about forbidden topics – the tools to spread their words and visions on sensitive topics?

Why All Marketers Should Love Online Video

Written by Igor Beuker on December 7th, 2008 | 4 comments

Recently Forrester reported that online video marketing will grow from $2 BLN to $7 BLN by 2012. But I think the credit crunch will drive online video marketing even further…

First of all, online video brings the back the power to the consumers. That’s why consumers love online video so much. Consumers have been terrorized by TV broadcasters and advertisers for decades, and now consumers are in control.

Online video empowers consumers to watch the content they love, whenever they feel the need to see it (24/7). This shift from push to pull is loved by digital consumers. So broadcasters and advertisers must try and understand this consumer need much better. In the social space advertisers should learn to behave as facilitators

And brands already believed in the power of TVC’s for decades. So to switch from TVC’s to online commercials with measurable impact and effectiveness is just a small step for brands.

Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 5 most popular viral videos, commercials or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.
ViralFriday

This weeks Viral Friday #1 position goes to Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Until Thanksgiving Day 2008 few if any people had been Rickrolled live by the real Rick Astley. The runner up spot is for the Simpsons with Mapple. Last Sunday, November 30th, a Simpsons episode involved a consumer-electronics company known as Mapple, the one that makes Mipods and Miphones. Zune Paint completes this week’s top 3. The marketers at Microsoft must have seen Sony’s paint ad and wanted to do ‘something with paint’ as well…

Kill Your (Personal) Brand, Fight Transparency

Written by Matthijs Roumen on December 2nd, 2008 | 5 comments

What if you do something wrong? People will write about it. People will spread the word. Why? Because they can. Because it became so easy with today’s technology. Reaching out to your peers with a question, statement or opinion isn’t about effort and time anymore.

It’s about the content of the message. Is it worth spreading? Will my friends like to hear it? A Belgium minister learned about this side of social media in a very hard lesson.

The truth about it is, that people will talk about your brand or personality if they think you did something wrong. Why wouldn’t they? Maybe they’ll help out other people making a decision. Only if you bind people to your brand, they won’t be / or will be talking less with bad mouths about you or your brand.

Vimeo Butternutjelly: Viral, Vulgar Or Spoof?

Written by Igor Beuker on December 1st, 2008 | no comments

Did high definition video sharing community Vimeo just release this video, in which it shows how to get from simple things to masterpieces (or how to make art with the arse)? Do your rate is video as viral, vulgar or spoof?

So whether you are an amateur film-maker, proud mom, restaurant critic, or just a guy with a cellphone, you can connect with Vimeo. Tell us, would a “proud mom” also feel attracted by this video marketing campaign of Vimeo?

Or is Vimeo not the brand behind this video and is this just another spoof? It might be, if you see the original video.
