Go Airlink NYC: Example How To Kill eCommerce

Written by Igor Beuker on May 9th, 2009 | 9 comments

Last 10 days I spent in New York City. It was a very inspiring trip again. However the last day, Go Airlink NYC frustrated my love for online marketing and eCommerce a bit. Read along why…

Go Airlink’s brand promise: the only way to go

At the Go Airlink NYC website you can book an airport shuttle: a Van or SUV to i.e. JFK Airport. Pretty handy knowing NYC traffic during rush hour. I pretty much liked their brand promise: “the only way to go”.

But I was shocked to learn that their brand promise was very holistic and not true. At the homepage the website told: “A printer is required to print your voucher, please do not book unless you have a printer.” So the claim: “the only way to go” seems to be in practice: “the only way NOT to go.”

Using Social Platforms To Boost Your Campaign

Written by Matthijs Roumen on May 7th, 2009 | 4 comments

Today I came across the new movie of neverhidefilms, the video productions of Ray-Ban. Once again, Ray-Ban managed to create a video with a highly viral element. Previously on ViralBlog, I wrote an article on Five Facts On Ray-Ban’s Viral Marketing Success. In this post I’d like to highlight another thing I’ve noticed about this video, the use of existing platforms in order to boost the campaign.

Swinefighter: Swine Flu Video Game Goes Viral

Written by Igor Beuker on May 6th, 2009 | 2 comments

As the world worries about an imminent pandemic, a video game that capitalizes on the lighter side of swine flu is gaining viral momentum online. How a virus becomes a viral game… In the video game Swinefighter, you must save the world – and yourself – from “killer pigs.”

And while the point is entertainment, the website also offers recommendations from the US Center of Disease Control on how to avoid contracting the swine flu.

It might sound twisted, but I think this viral game could contribute to raising top of mind awareness (TOMA) of the virus “swine flu” and how to prevent catching this nasty disease.

Gisele Bündchen SKY HD Flash Mob

Written by Paul van Veenendaal on May 5th, 2009 | 4 comments

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen stars in the latest advert for SKY HDTV, inspired by the current advertising flashmob craze. Created by advertising agency Giovanni+DraftFCB, based in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the film brings fiction to reality.

While Gisele is sitting on a red couch in the airport lobby, flipping the channels of her remote control, a ‘spontaneous’ football game (complete with marching band), weather newscast or war movie comes to life, as if the TV was broadcasting live!

Unborn Baby Kicks Its First Tweet On Twitter!

Written by Igor Beuker on May 4th, 2009 | 12 comments

Its never too early to start Twitter. But who ever imagined that an unborn baby could kick his first Tweet on Twitter?! A tech student from NYC who didn’t want to miss a single moment of his wife’s pregnancy, has invented a device that instantly posts his unborn baby’s kicks on Twitter…

Again I was shocked to see how cosmic collisions keep occurring within the social universe. Each time two planets clash, a new star is born. The only constant within the social universe is change. And I hope marketers will understand this one day, so they will start to embrace the power of technology…

Disney Buys Into Hulu. YouTube Should Worry!

Written by Igor Beuker on May 2nd, 2009 | 3 comments

During a taxi ride through NYC I saw at NBC news that Los Angeles based Hulu, the #3 video site in the US, just got major buy-in from Disney. Earlier major media companies News Corp and NBC took a stake of 27 percent in Hulu.

As the initial exclusivity for NBC and Fox content expires, Hulu will be adding Disney/ABC videos and TV shows to its distribution mix as well.

Hulu is becoming the preferred distribution channel for the big media companies. And it is succeeding in attracting the fickle Web audience. Hulu might soon become the #2 video site in the US. Read more about Hulu at Wikipedia.

This should worry YouTube, which is still casting about for a business model that will pay for its enormous storage and bandwidth costs. The media companies cannot ignore YouTube just yet, but by strengthening Hulu they can give it their best content first.
