Opticana Eyewear: The $500 Digital Campaign?

Written by Igor Beuker on December 31st, 2009 | no comments

Try to earn, before you burn. Hopefully many marketers will try to earn attention in 2010 so we will experience dozens of clever and witty campaigns. Therefore this tiny, clever and cheap campaign has my support…

The idea was created by McCann Erickson in Israƫl. It seems like a very simple, small, clever and indeed very cheap idea. Please tell us how you rate it. Or what you expect from digital marketing in 2010.

In the very old internet days, some smart nerds and commercial cowboys placed “their’ banners and textlinks on the 404 and error pages, hoping to earn some extra Dollars from affiliated poker and porn sites.

In 2009 we saw an increasing number of mixing real and virtual worlds, commonly known as augmented reality and probably best known in Android and iPhone app Layar. Just before the end of the year Adidas announces to also tap in to this hip technology.

By now I’m sure you will have heard about the situation with Eurostar, the company which saw 2,000 people stranded in the Channel Tunnel as their trains broke down due to the bad weather. Eurostar’s social media agency, We Are Social, took a lot of flak for the bad, or lack of communications of the brand during this crisis.

As has been pointed out by many social media pundits alike, the responsibility solely lies with the company itself for failing to look beyond social media campaigns. But something else struck me as interesting about this situation….

Traditionally all the brands advertising during the big game use every trick in the book to create the most memorable, noteworthy commercials. Pepsi has always been present on Superbowl Sunday, but not anymore from now on.

My favorite car brand Audi has launched the A1 project. The Audi A1 is a new car, targeting a new segment in a refreshing new way. Nice to see that Audi is moving away from traditional marketing and going towards a model which is more content-driven, engaged and focused on consumer dialogue.

In this campaign our SocialMedia8 teamed-up with DDB, LBi and MediaCom. The campaign is being monitored with ViralTracker.
