Interestingly, most people in the room were senior marketers at some of the largest and most successful brands. All these brands clearly social media very seriously as there did not appear to be a single intern in the room!

E-commerce has been around for almost 2 decades and is expected to grow to be a $200 Billion industry this year, according to Ad Week. It has added a layer of easiness to the shopping process, especially for people who hate shopping – such as myself.

And with many webshops now also following Zappos’ lead in offering free return shippings traditional shops will increasingly have to offer an experience to stay relevant.

Brands are increasingly starting to realise the importance of social media. Recent research by IBM among 1,700 leading CMOs indicated that social media is one of the key topics on their agenda moving forward.

But at the moment, many brands are still chasing the channels and focusing too much on cool concepts, rather than building long term relationships.

TNS have launched their latest version of the Digital Life study. The SocialMedia8 team have just followed the launch presentation and we have listed the key take aways most crucial to CMOs and marketers.

It’s a study conducted with over 70,000 people in 60 different countries. Not surprisingly, the importance of online and social conversations were highlighted as crucial to brands.

We conclude Asia Week here on Viralblog with the news that Asian businesses are rapidly adopting social media. Burson-Marsteller conducted research among the top 120 Asian business, as ranked by Wall Street Journal’s Asia 200 Index.
Over 80% of these companies are now using social media, compared to only 40% just a year ago. Particularly, businesses in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philipenes rapidly adopted social media in their approach.

Blackberry are in trouble. Social media is not the cause of it (we’ll get into that), but it has exasperated the problem. So please excuse the lame pun, but take the wider point on board.

October 10th, the problems begin as users start to realise they cannot use BBM, email or the internet. Quite essential elements of a smart phone, one could argue.
