Computer and video games have come a long way since pac-man was developed in 1980. When Super Mario Bros saw the light in 1985 nobody expected more than 40 million copies would be sold. The game became one of the most popular games in history so far and because of this huge success a movie about the brothers was made in 1991.
It was the first time a video game went into cinema and with this, a new trend started. Fans were able to see their heroes coming to life on the big screen. Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and – how could I forget – Tomb Raider followed. Some movies were a commercial success, although they did not all fare well critically.

With all the good examples around, lots of (young) people dream of becoming rap stars. With the new game Def Jam Rapstar, this ambition got a whole lot easier.

The game was created by Konami and 4mm Games. The cool thing about this game is that it makes great use of social media, making it easy for players with musical ambitions to put themselves out there.

Social Gaming; for many still a fairly new concept, but massive in the background. Take Zynga (Who? The company behind FarmVille, among others), for this Sunday evening a nice infograpic to show just how big social gaming is (getting).

Social gaming is not just a fun way to spend some free time, it’s also a great way for brands to interact with consumers in a non-intrusive manner. The popularity of Zygna’s games accompanied by the high level of gamers’ engagement make it a powerful advertising platform.

Together with London-based startup Playfish EA Sports announced a new game, FIFA Superstars, will soon have gamers scoring goals on Facebook. EA Sports head Peter Moore made the announcement on the official EA Sports blog, which is under construction at the moment.

According Moore “Our FIFA products connect fans from all over the world who share a common passion for the sport, and soon our partnership with Playfish will allow us to bring the FIFA brand to the growing Facebook community with a new game called FIFA Superstars.”

Remember the virtual worlds of Habbo Hotel and Second Life? If you did not believe in social gaming yet, how about FarmVille on Facebook? Where close to 80 million active users flock to FarmVille to perform virtual farming daily.

The most popular online Facebook game ever, FarmVille Facebook hit like a hurricane and didn’t go back. Just think, this game started online June 19, 2009. The developer, Zynga, states that FarmVille “is bigger than Twitter and [was] valued at $1 billion last month (mashable.com)”.
FarmVille’s popularity is exploding online and won the most prestigious award this year: The 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony declared last month in Los Vegas that “the top honor in the ‘Social Networking Game of the Year’ category went to Zynga’s massively popular Facebook game FarmVille”.

X-Factor has once again been a huge success this year. During last weekend’s final viewing figures peaked at 19.1m viewers and the showed averaged a healthy 11.8m viewership each weekend. That’s an audience share of well over 40%, with a 62% peak during this season’s grand finale.

But it seems that some people are starting to grow tired of the X-Factor winning candidate being Christmas number 1 almost by default. And it’s easy to understand why, here’s a list of the Christmas UK number 1s the last few years:

Today I bumped into a fine piece of Augmented Reality work from Zugara. The game is called Cannonballz and is one of the first game I’ve ever seen where you can interact with Augmented Reality which is also connected to your Facebook.
