Will Facebook Overtake Twitter?

Last weekend Facebook’s 225+ million users have been given the opportunity to register their own personal profile URL. Instead of a random numbered ID users are now able to choose a name as they wish. It is reported Facebook now has over 3 million custom URL’s.

Not unexpected this of course brings in some fun vanity URL’s as well. However, the question rises what Facebook has planned for its next step.

First of all, being given the opportunity to select your own username instead of a numerical identification gives you your personal Facebook name.
Secondly, this brings in better search results. It is not difficult to remember one’s name (albeit not a silly one) rather than its numerical ID thus improving the search results.

And thirdly, Facebook recently launched status updates, giving a user the chance and opportunity to share with the world whatever he/she is doing or thinking etc.

If you take these 3 additions to Facebook in consideration it is not a big step anymore for Facebook to add @reply functions effectually entering Twitter’s business. It will increase the use of Facebook and its advertising revenues and being able to grow bigger.
