Mashable reports that a television show, based on votes cast by MySpace users, will be broadcasted on MTV. The show will be called ‘The MySpace Chart. It will be broadcasted weekly on MTV2.

Phillip O’Ferrall explains the move in the Guardian:

“The audience for MTV2 and MySpace are incredibly similar”

Don Cook, marketing director at MySpace explains further:

“The way that consumers are accessing music is changing and The MySpace Chart on MTV2 brings together two of the most important forces in this evolution.

“MySpace is the world’s largest online music destination connecting bands and their fans and it will be exciting to see how the community will contribute to the show.”

There is a lot of discussion going on about traditional marketing vs new marketing, online vs traditional and all that jazz, so it’s good to see an initiative which takes the best from both worlds and shapes it into a new concept. It will be interesting to see how the show will be received and what kinda content will be voted onto the show. With the added bonus of appearing on the MTV Network the stakes are even higher to reach the viral effect on MySpace.

Interesting point of note: MTV is owned by Viacom, while MySpace is owned by rival media company News Corp.
