Never Too Old?
Who says partying all night is only for the young? This ‘slightly older’ lady has taken a (last-minute?) career turn and is now a quite popular DJ.
Taken on by French producer Aurelien Simon, 69 year-old ‘Mamy Rock’ learned the spinning of the wheels and recently released a single.
Ruth Flowers (Mamy Rock’s real name) first experienced the glory of mixing when she went to a club with her son. Now she plays at various clubs in France and England. With her hair spiked with gel and her diamond-encrusted earphones this DJ grandmother is an oxymoron come alive.
People say that she doesn’t even sound half bad, but is that really why this grandma is so popular on YouTube? Mashable applies the formula “Elderly Person + Incongruous Activity + Proper British Accent = Instant Pass-along” and I tend to agree. There are lots of better, more experienced DJ’s out there, only the fact that an old person is doing something that is perceived as youthful makes it more interesting than a DJ playing a perfect set. This to me sounds almost discriminating. There are lots of older people who climb mountains, have babies and do things they are supposedly too old for. But aren’t they just living life and enjoying it like anyone else does?
Anyway, the formula seems to work as Ruth has already over 60.000 views of her interviews and performances (cumulation of YouTube videos). Let’s see if she settles in the DJ scene!

It just breaks the status quo in a given domain.. that’s my definition of successful formula!
