My Opinion

Great social marketing strategies are created when we adapt to actionable insights in the right context.

Due to lack of experience, old habits and DNA issues, most marketers and agencies tend to follow old behavior and use social media as broadcasting platforms. Wrong.

The word social implies that broadcasting, spamming or other ways of interruptive, distracting, selfish, one-way mind-jacking advertising does not work in the social media space.

Today you can still buy media, but in social media you can no longer buy attention. You have to earn it.

And many CMO’s have put themselves outside the community of human beings, totally misunderstanding the truth of who we are and why we belong.

So especially in social media, brands should not only advertise their products. They should add value to our conversations and add meaningfulness to our lives. If you don’t, stay out of social media.

In the context part, the 74% of the marketers that thinks about Facebook: Be aware that Facebook is the world’s largest lease company. If you think you own your fans, think again. Your fans are on lease!

The meaning of fans on lease? You don’t own them. The fans are not yours to keep. You will pay to acquire the fans and next you will have to pay to communicate to your fans. Time and time again. Have you ever checked Facebook EdgeRank?

Next, mobile is clearly the consumers’ next gateway to: Content, communities, friends, brands and shopping. See the numbers, they are staggering, stunning and massive.

However, many leading consumer brands still don’t have mobile apps for iOS and Android? Still many brands offer a horrifying experience on the mobile web? Optimize your site for the mobile week, and start next week.

When you tap into social media for lead generation? Think about fans on lease. Create your own media platform and build an opt-in database owned by you.

When you tap into social media for ecommerce? Think about closing the loop and crate a See, Like, Buy funnel.
