The Winter Olympics are always a huge event and the current ongoings in Vancouver are no different. Millions around the world watch how the athletes bomb down the slopes and hit the ice and that brings huge opportunities for marketers.

The Royal Canadian Mint is inviting Canadians from coast to coast to coast to prove why they are the ultimate Vancouver 2010 fan.  From February 10, 2010 to March 21, 2010, people can visit FACE.MINT.CA to tell their tale by video or short story.

Up for grabs are two grand prizes of 100 personalized medallions produced by the Royal Canadian Mint featuring the face of the winner. The grand prize also includes a trip for two to Ottawa to accept the medallions.

The campaign website makes great use of social media platforms such as Facebook Connect, allowing people to use their Facebook profile to login – making it easy to access, but also easy to share any produced content.

The Mint is an Official Supporter of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and is looking to utilise social media to make the most of their sponshorship of this year’s Winter Olympics.

The Face of the Games campaign is a great tie in with a current event and to get people more engaged. Besides the campaign website there is also the Tweet for Gold Twitter campaign.

We think this is a very good campaign that combines a great worldwide event and social media to create an engaging experience. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want their face on a gold medal? 😉
