It’s more than five years since the first tweet has been posted. And with 460,000 new accounts per day on average over last month, Twitter is one of the fastest growing social networks.

Twitter 5th Birthday Anniversary

It’s amazing how much users can make out from 140 characters and with the boost of mobile and tablets the number of new accounts openings can be expected to rise.

For this anniversary Twitter also set up a website where 16 famous twitter users such as rapper Snoop Dog, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, tennis star Serena Williams and others explain for what they use Twitter.

And the infographic made by KISSMetrics gives a brief overview on Twitter growth over the past five years:

From another inforgraphic, with data based on a survey by postling.com, it’s interesting to see how the small business uses Twitter. The top three social networks used by small business are Twitter on the first place with 78%, followed closely by Facebook with 75% and on the number three is LinkedIn with 30% usage.

Twitter is considered to be the most interactive medium for small business, but when compared to traffic generation, Facebook scores big time. So which social network should small business use and spend time, effort and money to gain most of it? The answer is BOTH.

Because Facebook generates more traffic to the site, while Twitter engages and interacts with prospects and customers. And as community management has to be taken seriously, it is needed to take into consideration that in this case more means really more: when small business posted 8+ times a week, there were 10.27 comments per day.

When compared to less than one post a week, the replies dropped significantly to 0.02 comments per day. It’s definitively not a great idea to expect prospects, fans and customers to start the dialogue, this has to be ignited by the business.
