Auschwitz Joins Facebook, But Not For Long

Earlier Laurens wrote about Anne Frank’s appearance on Youtube and now Auschwitz, the most infamous death camp in which millions of people died during World War II died, has joined Facebook. Well, they had but their page is no where to be found.

The article in the Guardian announcing the arrival of the page indicates it is yet unclear as to why the page has gone offline. I’d imagine that the bold move by the Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau has sadly backfired.

Why a bold move you ask? Because the Holocaust is topic which can make tempers flare and pulses rise – Mahmoudh Ahmadinejad famously and ridiculously claims it never even happened. Sadly, there is a large minority that has similar beliefs. And whilst many refuse to speak out in public, the internet provides the safe haven where these sad individuals can speak out.

There is nothing like religion to polarise opinions and I’d imagine that the small group of staff at the museum were overwhelmed by the reponse, both positive and negative (The Guardian reports they amassed nearly 1,500 fans in two days) and decided to shut down as the group was beyond control.

Auschwitz is part of a bleak and dark part of human history and its lessons should never be forgotten to ensure we won’t make the same mistakes in the future. So I hope they find a way to make this work.
