How Students Stream Music From Their Amsterdam Home

In IJburg, an Amsterdam residential area, you will find a building overflowing with music. The student residence called ‘Home’ houses sixty-nine international students of the Amsterdam Conservatory.

Surrounded by young families and urban professionals, these musical talents are somewhat of a dissonance in this neighbourhood.

The project ‘Home Recording’ enables them to virtually break down the walls of their building and share their melodies with neighbours, relatives at home and everyone else.

So what is Home Recording exactly?

Home Recording is an art project connecting temporary inhabitants of IJburg with their neighbourhood and the rest of the world. Inspired by the iconic ‘on air’ studio light, a huge red light at the facade of the building indicates when an occupant is transmitting live on this website.

If you are not living next door, you can follow the project via Facebook and Twitter. This way you will be notified with status updates and tweets about all the recordings.

And to make sure that not a single note will be lost, all home recordings are safely stored in the online archive on the website.

The core of the project is the Home Recording studio, a fully equipped but low-tech recording booth, streaming directly to the Home Recording website.

In order to record and stream live, all the student has to do is head towards the fully equipped, low-tech recording booth, make the necessary control panel adjustments and once ready, swipe the fog key to record live.

My Opinion?

I like the concept, definitely some ‘Vimeo material’, if you understand what I mean. It offers the studnet a great opportunity to share their talents with their neighborhood, but also the world. Maybe the next Miles Davis or Vanessa-Mae are between these students?

I also like the interior design, shoudl definitely be inspiring to the students. Check out some more images in the gallery below:

What About You?

Do you like the concept? Looking forward to your reply!
