Hi Nicole.

I agree with you, many brands think that they always should pay for attention first, but forget that they already have their own website, optin email database, Facebook pages (whether it's their own or user generated) etc.

Focus on Owned and Earned Media instead of Bought Media. Look at all the tools you have at hand and use them in a smart way. If you do it right, it might save you some marketing budget for 2010 :-)

I completely agree with point 4. Create a Social Media Strategy. Having a (brand) presence within social spaces is one thing, but think about goals and targets.

What is it you want to achieve and think about it.

Do it once and do it well.

I have covered multiple items on companies who have created a social media strategy (Coca-Cola being the last). Companies do need to think about it and act on it.

Don't wait for it to be too late.

Hi Daan,

I totally agree with you. Being on facebook or Youtube is not an objective, these are just means to reach your audience.

Stop chasing the shiny new tools!

It's great you want your brand to be on Twitter, but if you're fans and the people you are looking to reach are not on there - what's the point?!

Objectives and strategy come before technology and tools.

Great resolutions!

I totally agree with you that it all starts with listening to your audience!

Here's mine resolution:

Keep on listening to your audience. You cannot jut listen for a month, but you should benchmark conversations the whole year.
