Social Networking’s Dark Side
Whether it is companies using social networking to promote their brands and products to land more business or individuals using social media to reach out to friends, family and new acquaintances, the possibilities are endless.
That being said, social networking can have its dark side, and a recent poll suggests cyber bullying is alive and well.
According to an Associated Press/MTV survey, more than half of all responding teens and young adults indicate they were bullied and/or harassed while using the Internet. In fact, the poll witnessed a six percent increase (50 to 56 percent) in that figure from a similar poll taken just two years ago.
While teens and younger adults can often be the victims of such acts due to some of the crowd they hang with and the ages involved, the survey results lead to some concerns for parents and the individuals harassed themselves.
Among the typical types of cyber bullying are posting something that is false, writing things on the Internet that are “mean” and sharing texts and/or other messages that were supposed to remain in confidence.
Given the worries about strangers using the Internet to go after teens and those even younger, ironically most of the troublemakers involved in bad on-line behavior are people the victims know quite well, according to the survey.
Among the highlights from the survey:
- One in three respondents report they have been involved in “sexting,” which includes sending and obtaining nude photos, videos or sexually laden text;
- Seventy-one percent of individuals mentioned above indicate that “sexting” is a problem for those their age using the Internet;
- Ten percent of respondents who’ve exchanged sexual messages indicate they have done so with individuals they only know on-line;
More respondents in 2011 than in 2009 recognize on-line bullying for the problem that it is, with more (56 to 49 percent) indicating they would now intervene than two years ago.
According to a written statement from MTV, “The campaign is built on the understanding that there’s a ‘thin line’ between what may begin as a harmless joke and something that could end up having a serious impact on you or someone else.
We know no generation has ever had to deal with this, so we want to partner with you to help figure it out.”
Internet, Cell Phones Popular Items
As the survey shows, today’s generation is for the most part hooked on the Internet and cell phones.
The survey points out that seven in 10 had logged into a social networking site in just the last week, while eight in 10 had sent a text to a friend.
Meantime, close to three in 10 young people report their significant other has checked up on them electronically numerous times a day or read their text messages minus permission.
Finally, 14 percent of respondents report experiencing more abusive behavior from their boyfriends or girlfriends including name calling and nasty messages.
With the technologically-driven age that we live in only going to increase and size and usage, both young and old alike would be wise to turn the lights out once and for all on cyber bullying.
