Volkswagen’s Das Interland & Das Länderspiel
Tapping into the biggest rivalry in soccer history, Volkswagen has launched their EURO2012 campaign, pitting real Germans against real Dutchmnen in a penalty shootout on both Facebook and mobile.
Millions of football fans are waiting impatiently for the classic Holland against Germanymatch, on the 13th of June 2012 in Ukraine.
Volkswagen shortens the waiting time as from 1 – 12 June 2012 fans can already try to beat each other, Dutch fans on ‘Das Interland‘, German fans on ‘Das Länderspiel‘.
Fans can play the game on Facebook and on iPhone, iPad and Android phones. The online multiplayer game connects Dutch and Germans through an innovative technology which connects smartphones and Facebook real time. If you want to play, the game will instantly search for a real opponent.
If there are no Dutchmen or Germans available, a robot will fill in, which has the average level of performance of all players of the country you’re playing againts. Check the promovideos of each country below:
Das Interland: ‘Versla die Mannschaft‘
Das Länderspiel: ‘Mach mit und schlag die Holländer!‘
The game is the first European Championship collaboration between Volkswagen Germany and Volkswagen Holland. On the first day, there were already over 25,000 penalty shoot outs and the app also reached the top 10 best apps in the appstore.
After a week there were over 130,000 shout outs, with an average game time of 12 minutes. Looking forward to your comments on the concept and the results
Currently, The Dutch seems to be winning. You can play for Holland on Das Interland and for Germany on Das Länderspiel.

The Dutch keeper is a copy of Rudd Gullit 1988
Would have expected a more sophisticated game play and experience from VW.
I know nice and simple can work very fine, but for a brand driven by innovation like VW, it could have had more surprising and fun elements..
This match has so much deep emotion and passion in it, that a smarter mechanism would have taken the buzz and viral effect to the next levels..
Schade!
I like the concept, especially because players cab compete on behalf of their country.
The Dutch keeper looks indeed on the 1988 Gullit. But in one of the animatiosn after a game, he spits at the Rudi Völler look-a-like.
In 1990, at the World Cup, Rijkaard spitted to Völler (everybody knows that), so I’m not quite sure what the idea behind this part is. Perhaps they wanted to create a character that symbolizes something between Rijkaard en Gullit?

Realy love this app! I see we’re owning these Germans already! One piece of luck for Germany: It won’t end with penalty kicks, cause we will beat you before the 90th minute…
And yup, I’m from Holland
Really like the idea, but think the execution good have done a little bit better, but hey the game seems a succes
Hi Guys,
A little reply from ‘the makers’
Thanks for the post, compliments and of course sound criticism.
@ Igor Beuker: Volkswagen is on innovation, but even more on
Brand Sympathy. We’ve putted the innovation in the back-end, not the front-end, giving any orange or ‘mannschaft’ fan a low barrier means to fight germany on a personal title.
@ Laurens: Gullit, Rijkaard as long as you recognize either one of these iconic players (indeed of the late ’80′s) we’re fine (and don’t run into portrait rights issues at the same time : )
@ all: we are about to hit 1.000.000 penalty’s taken in 4 days.
Thanks for the comment and congrats with the great concept. Looking forward to the final results.
One result is already clear: Holland is winning
