The Correspondent, an Amsterdam-based start-up aimed at presenting quality online journalism, reached a crowdfunding milestone: over 1 million Euro (approx. $1.3 million) in just 8 days.

Over 17,000 funders are helping creators Rob Wijnberg (Dutch journalist) and Harald Dunnink (founder of Momkai) to set up a new online platform for in-depth news analysis and long-form journalism, due in September 2013.

The platform aims to focus on slow journalism and background stories and will be entirely advertisement-free.

The Correspondent will be an independently-built, fully-digital platform for desktop, mobile and tablet use, uniquely combining technical flair, meaningful design and quality journalism. Prospective members sign up to follow some of Europe’s best-known and revered authors and writers, hailing from publications such as The Guardian and NRC.

Here’s the platform’s Manifesto:

RobRob Wijnberg, former chief-editor of national Dutch newspaper nrc.next quotes:

“With another 22 days remaining in the campaign, it is amazing to see how many people are willing to subscribe to our mission of producing quality journalism online. And not only that: willing to pay for it as well. The enthusiasm surrounding it – we did not foresee.”

Currently the Correspondent has reached 115% of their initial target:

My opinion?
It’s amazing to see how quick The Correspondent was able to raise their funding. Apparently there’s a big need in the Netherlands on how people want to consume news.

In the Netherlands the Correspondent is the biggest crowdfunding project ever.

And although it does not come near Pebble’s $10 million crowdfunding project (target $100k!), it still a big achievement as the Netherlands has nearly 17 million residents compared to over 315 million potential crowdfunding investors in the US.

You can check out the teaser website here.

What about you?
Would you pay 60 Euro each year for an independent digital platform with quality journalism?

If it really is quality journalism then 60 euro seems like a good price :)

One man can start a movement, certainly if he starts with “why”.

The Netherlands could certainly use a new VOC era!

A fresh look at human, entrepreneurial, cultural and business skills could help the country back on its feet.

Politics certainly needs a helping hand.

And with all the banking and insurance fraude, time to move towards a new energy: doing good!

Regain trust. Have a cause, purpose, passion or belief.
