Dr Pepper: Cherry Chocolate Rain Viral ft. Tay
This is hot and fresh from the press, thanks to a tip in our network. Dr Pepper added the new viral music video Cherry Chocolate Rain to YouTube November 28, 2007. The music video is starring Internet icon Tay and Mista Johnson. With this hilaric viral commercial Dr Pepper is celebrating it’s new Cherry Chocolate beverage.
The video was produced by True Entertainment, directed by Jeff Tomsic and the song was produced by ID Labs Productions. You can download MP3 here.
I think the Cherry Chocolate Rain music video reminds me of this song: Oran “Juice” Jones-The Rain. Remember that old skool song from your first R&B moves? It was released in 1986 by Def Jam.

I talked about it on my blog too. My opinion is a bit different, I hate this kind of Youtube monsters!
Fair play to the kid I say. He got his 15 minutes of fame thanks to Youtube and he makes the most of it.
That doesn’t mean I am going to rush to the store to buy his album though
When I saw his video the first time I thought he was faking the voice. I was convinced it wasn’t real until I saw an interview with him and it scared the bejaysus out of me! His voice is unreal!
I’m not against the guy himself, he made what everyone with a bag full of cash in front of the face would do
I think the brand took a too easy way though, the commercial is to direct and makes no sense in a way. The use of Youtube stars can be very creative, can be funny, can be shocking, also the reach of a tv commercial is far way more than of a youtube video (at least for now!). Dr Pepper, instead, just took the guy and made him do the exact same thing as the original video, just in a contest with tits and asses floating around. And that’s not really creative at all…(and one great thing of viral marketing is that it can be really creative because has almost no boundaries)

I agree that the creative execution is far from perfect. I think it’s good to see a large brand taking a risk in a way like this and try something new though. It’s about time the creatives woke up and smelled the coffee. This is the way of the future. People have spoken and said they liked Tay, so it’s only natural companies use him for ads. Should happen a lot more and hopefully will do in the future.
The thing I missed in this video, and which I thought was hilarious in the original, is how he kept moving away from the mic to get some air. Surely they could have incorporated that a bit more. They mentioned it, but they should have based the video around that.
I agree with you, It’s a very interesting evolution of marketing, but one of the most interesting aspects is the freedom it gives to creatives. Here it’s like 1/100 of the potential is exploited. And how didn’t they take care of the air aspect??? It’s like watching Jurassic Park without dinosaurs
Hehe I like the analogy!
You are right though. Still, I think it’s a step in the right direction. It may not be perfect, but it’s showing people are starting to look in the right direction.
I agree with you, the direction is right, It’s incredible how much time it took though.
Ps. you’re Dutch? I’m Italian but working as an intern for a Dutch agency, BSUR. Do you know it?
Yeah, I’m Dutch. We’ve got a nice internationally orientated bunch here. I noticed on your blog you’re Italian. Love the country!
I Study in England, but am currently on placement in Holland at Onetomarket.
I’ve never heard of BSUR – what do they do exactly? And what is your role?
Btw, Ed Wood – not much of an Italian name is it?
My role is the intern, so nothing and everything at the same time
. Basically strategical planning and some branding. Anyway, I’ll head home in a few weeks to finish my studies.
Ed Wood is one of my favourite characters ever!
my real name is Antonio though, definitely an Italian name
@ Antonio
Hey! Do you happen to know Martina from Adverblog?
Cheers
