Is Touch Of Gold The Best Viral EVER?
This week Brandrepublic published a top 10 best virals ever made and it puts Nike’s Touch of Gold video with Ronaldinho as the best viral ever.
Yes, this video is probably one of the most seen viral videos ever, with millions and millions of views and with EVERYONE talking about it and sure, it won several awards! But, is it really the best viral video ever??
Nike got everyone’s attention when they launched the viral video Touch of Gold featuring Ronaldinho, the best soccer player in the world (at that time), trying out his new Nike Gold shoes and amazed everyone by hitting the crossbar three times in a row. I remember everyone was talking about the viral video for ages! Discussing whether or not it was fake, was he really THAT good? And that was exactly the great thing about this viral! Everyone was talking about it and it let to huge online buzz and discussions.
But in my opinion this is not my favorite viral video ever, maybe because I’m not a big soccer fan. I can imagine if you are a fan it must be one of the best virals in history. I will share with you my two favorite viral videos. The first one is actually from my home country, Denmark, and I see that it made Brandrepublics top 10 list as number 6 – it is Dynamite surfing from Quicksilver create by Saatchi & Saatchi Denmark.
This video huge buzz in the media and especially the Danish media and the police was looking for suspicious people who could be behind this crime.
My second video I would like to mention is for Sony Bravia TV. This is great because it is just a simple, beautiful and well produced viral which in my opinon deserves some credit.
This is my personal favorite viral videos and I’m sure yours are different. Let me know which videos you think deserves some point to be on the list as best viral video ever – I’m sure I missed a few or ten

I’m a huge football fan and Touch of Gold is great. Especially in terms of: # of viewed clips. On awareness and brand impact I would say:
Reebok’s Terry Tate or Trojan Games (Bucharest 2003 Olympics) are high on my list, sorry Ronaldinho!
Maybe not compared by content, but on architecture and strategy behind those 2 programs: to me Nike is great, but too straight forward and it has holes in it’s strategic approach and tactics. That’s where the other 2 are strategically close to perfection. (sorry, strategic planners point of view probably

And Virgin and Burger King have impressed me several times virally. Off course BK’s Subservient Chicken was groundbreaking, but they have done more!
BK Whopper Freakout is brilliant in the way they let their customers defend their ‘great’ product. Smart approach, using satisfied and loyal customers!! Not used by many brands yet!

And I like Obama Girl. But that’s maybe because of the content (the girl), within the video content. That’s more from a male rather than a strategic point of view.
It was the first time ever I wished for an interactive or touch screen opportunity! A subservient Obama Girl application? Now that would make me go through the AIDA chain in 4 immediate steps, and I would have been willing to pay with PayPal at once, talking about instant satisfaction
Cheers

Check out this awesome Christmas card:

Those are all great, I think that Dove Evolution deserves to be a part of this conversation too…
Also, it wasn’t as prolific in views as the ones mentioned above, but “Bear Fight” from back in 2006 (around the time that Youtube really started to blow up I believe) still is one of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVS1UfCfxlU
Yeah! The Bear Fight is really good as well. I think this recent one about Danish Karen is really smart! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8Seo5j_mNU
Got everyone posting about about and created a lot of usergenerated videos as well! Clever thinking.
