McDonald’s: ‘Ricky La Cuela’ Viral Campaign

McDonald’s Spain just released a new viral campaign Ricky La Cuela to promote its savings program EuroAhorro: where you can buy lots of McDonald’s products for just one coin (one or two euros). See the ‘to be NBA star’ Ricky Rubio in the viral videos.

The guys at TBWA-i said Spanish NBA fans already know what Ricky Rubio can do with the ball. Now look at what he can do with a coin. Ricky La Cuela in English means about this: Ricky gets it done.

TBWA-i created 5 videos starring Ricky Rubio. The videos do well at YouTube Spain. The campaign consists of a landing page, a banner campaign and a YouTube Channel.

We don’t know about the seeding and the tracking of the virals, but we do know that YouTube only represents a small portion of the total video reach in Spain.

The Ricky La Cuela campaign for McDonald’s Spain reminds me of the Portuguese Sumol Best Tricks campaign, in which skate icon Ruben Gamito and BMX dude Miquel Cardoso starred in the viral videos. Would this be a South European approach to create virals?
