Viral Friday: Paris Hilton For President

Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 10 most popular viral videos, commercials or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.

This weeks Viral Friday #1 position goes to Paris Hilton with Celeb. After being compared to Barack Obama, Hilton announces she wants to compete with “the wrinkled old man with the white hair”. The runner up spot is for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession commercial. The commercial featuring Eva Mendes wearing nothing but her birthday costume is banned from American television because the ad is “too sexy”. The Montauk Moster completes this week’s top 3. An animal that looks like a bloated, hairless dog, except that it’s got an eagle-like beak, a prominent brow ridge and a curiously elongated front paw washed up on a beach in Montauk.

Do you want to see this week’s list from 1 to 10? Go on then, and have a look! We’d like to hear your opinion about the virals. Have fun!

1. Paris Hilton For President

Last week John McCain compared his Democratic rival Barack Obama with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. He called them meaningless Hollywood stars without leading capabilities. After Barack Obama, who immediately responded with the Low Road spot, Paris Hilton made a reaction to the video as well.

In a homemade video Hilton announces she wants to compete with “the wrinkled old man with the white hair” and states she’ll paint the White House pink. The viral video got 5.7 million views in just two days time, can be found on 1.500 blogs and made it to the international news media. (Source: NOS, RTL Nieuws)

2. Eva Mendes: Secret Obsession

This commercial for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession perfume featuring Eva Mendes wearing nothing but her birthday costume is banned from American television because the ad is “too sexy”. A solid strategy from a marketing point of view: show a nipple, ad gets banned, ad goes viral, save media dollars. (Source:

3. Montauk Monster

The Montauk Moster washed up on a beach in Montauk at the far eastern end of New York’s Long Island. On Tuesday afternoon, a photo was posted on Gawker, which treated the Montauk monster with characteristic respect: “Good Luck With Your Hell Demons”. The animal looks like a bloated, hairless dog, except that it’s got an eagle-like beak, a prominent brow ridge and a curiously elongated front paw. (Source:

4. Britney And McCain In 2008

John McCain scores big with his videos this week. In this one John McCain announces his new running mate; Britney Spears! Obviously it’s not real, Barely political made this video. In just 6 days the video got almost 1.7 million views on YouTube.

5. Oreo Elevator

Oreo cookies taste better when dipped in milk, apparently. Advertising agency DraftFCB demonstrates the way to eat an Oreo by using an elevator to show that Oreo is milk’s favorite cookie. (Source: I Believe in Advertising)

6. iPhone Arm

Need to text or twitter 24/7? Get the iPhone Arm and be able to keep everyone posted on your every move! Internet Superstar introduces the iPhone Arm to help us free up a hand when using an iPhone. (Source: Laughing Squid)

7. Samsung: Follow Your Instinct

Samsung launched an online campaign to promote their supposed iPhone killer, the Samsung Instinct. Obviously the campaign features a special website, but more innovative is the interactive short movie “Follow Your INSTINCT“, which can be watched on YouTube only. The movies are connected through YouTube annotations, which makes it the first commercial use of annotations. (Source: Adverblog)

8. The Light Pong Masters

Grey made a viral campaign for the City of Madrid (Ayuntamiento de Madrid) to create awareness around saving energy. The Light Pong Masters show how easy it can be to switch off lights in your house. (Source: Markarina)

9. NFL Fantasy Files

In 2006 the NFL and Reebok introduced three viral-style commercials called “NFL Fantasy Files” to promote and drive traffic to the NFL website. Last week Blue Room released four new Fantasy Files videos featuring Laurence Maroney (New England Patriots), Mason Crosby (Green Bay Packers), Chris Cooley (Washington Redskins) and Chris Chambers (San Diego Chargers).

10. Jeep Wrangler: Have Fun Out There

Jeep took advantage of the heaviest storm New Zealand has seen since 1976. An amateur videoed how the storm took down a big tree (which barely missed a passing car), uploaded the video and lots of people watched it. Jeep, with help of Colenso 99 from Auckland, edited the video to their own version.

Meanwhile, the McCain camp had the following to say.

Paris obviously has some marketing savvy; she can turn anything into a PR boost for herself… thx to McCain’s miscalculation, she’ll be selling more cans of wine than ever
