Viral Friday: We Are The World

Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 5 most popular viral videos, commercials, games or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.
ViralFriday

This week’s Viral Friday #1 position goes to We Are The World 25 For Haiti. The original version of We Are The World was released 25 years ago, that calls for a remake for Haiti. The runner up spot is for the The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. Old Spice will make your man stop smelling like a lady, start smelling like a man on a horse. A Brief History Of Pretty Much Everything completes this week’s top 3. For his art course 17 years old Jamie Bell created this very cool flipbook animation.

Do you want to see this week’s list from 1 to 5? Go on then, and have a look! We’d like to hear your opinion about the virals. Have fun!

Get our ViralBlog asset: the Viral Friday Widget! By default the widget shows you the latest Viral Friday, but it’ll also show you the seven most recent postings on ViralBlog.

1. We Are The World 25 For Haiti

The original version of We Are The World was released 25 years ago. Quincy Jones, the producer of the original version, also did the production for this one. Over 80 artists contributed and the video was directed by Paul Haggis. Next to this immensely popular video (9,748,720 views in a week’s time) there are other videos on the organisation’s channel consisting of interviews and various versions of the song. If you’re in for something less heavy after this, check out the well intended but sometimes hilarious video responses.

2. The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

Two weeks ago Old Spice, the iconic brand of male grooming products made by Procter & Gamble, launched this ad telling men to stop smelling like a lady. In the ad, a commercial for body wash presented by the man your man could smell like, men are being told to stop smelling like a lady. And at the same time ladies are told to buy their man Old Spice, and be on a boat. And have tickets to that thing you love. In two weeks time, with all Super Bowl commercials in between, the video got almost 2 million views on YouTube.

3. A Brief History Of Pretty Much Everything

Jamie Bell, who goes by “DispleasedEskimo” on YouTube, is a 17 years old lad from the United Kingdom. For his art course he created this flipbook animation, using about 2,100 sheets of paper. It took him three weeks. The song in the video is French Cancan by Jacques Offenbach, completed with sound effects from Valve‘s game Team Fortress 2. Jamie uploaded his creation on 4 January, but it only got noticed (as in: started to reach viral spread) when posted on the Polish Joe Monster on 8 February. Today Jamie’s creation has almost 1.5 million views on YouTube.

4. L.A.R.P. Live Avatar Role Playing

James Cameron’s “Avatar” is now the most successful film of all time and that calls for parodies. Pool Worldwide, CZAR and Boom Chicago created the ‘mockumentary’ “L.A.R.P. Live Avatar Role Playing”. The video features Avatar fans who turn to Live Avatar Role Playing and transform to the Na’vi People of Hometree Wisconsin. The video was uploaded to YouTube and is spreading the web like crazy: within a week’s time the video got over 650,000 views, over 2,500 comments and was featured on some of the greater blogs such as The Huffington Post, Perez Hilton and Wired.

5. The PUMA Hardchorus

This video already appeared on ViralBlog last week, when Valentine’s Day was still to come. At the time, the views were not nearly as high as they are now with 675,859 today. According to the YouTube statistics, people really picked up the video after Valentine’s Day, which to me seems a little too lateā€¦ Nevertheless Puma have created the perfect loophole for hooligan love birds who’d secretly rather go see the game than be with their girlfriends, by creating this remake of Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply.
