The New Google Chrome OS
Google is taking Chrome OS to the cloud. Five months after the announcement of Chrome, Google now released the source codes to the operating system. At the same time, the company released a series of videos explaining Chrome OS.
Google claims that Chrome is fast, simple and safe and all necessary applications can be found on the web.
In July, when Google first announced that they were working on a new OS, they stated:
‘We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be’
As with everything Google does the company first released a beta version Chromium. It will take another year till the official release of the Google Chrome OS. Google is now looking to engage with partners, the open source community and developers to take Chrome to the next level and everyone can contribute.
The first responses to Chrome OS seem varied and do raise questions on the safety of using the cloud to store all your stuff. Others wonder what Google Chrome has to offer what already existing OS such as windows 7 /Android/ Linux do not. While others turn the question around asking what Google Chrome does not do what older bloated operating systems do, making it possible to work faster and access the Internet instantly after starting up your computer. For all of you wondering and curious to see how it works, Google released an 11-minute demo video of Chrome, which you can watch at Chrome’s official YouTube channel.
