Facebook Frenzy

Two weeks ago I posted a thorough study and analysis of the phenomenon Facebook by FaberNovel Consulting. This weekend I came across a lot of other interesting Facebook buzz. It all started with Valleywag’s rumor of Google snapping up Facebook for $15 billion (7,5% of Google’s $200 billion value) and this great Q&A interview of John Battelle with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, California.

One Facebook App I really enjoyed this weekend was “Cities I’ve Visited“, which was bought for $3 million by TripAdvisor a few months ago. It currently has about 3 million users. A great way to see the viral growth of this app is through Adonomics. I interacted about half an hour with this Facebook App, which is far greater than the 4:30 minutes average time spent per visitor. In an interview with the Boston Globe on the 8th of October, Stephen Kaufer (chief executive of Tripadvisor) told the Boston newspaper traffic to TripAdvisor.com had jumped from 6 million visitors in April to 7 million in August!

So on my quest for some more interesting Facebook research, I also stumbled on some great Facebook posts by South African blogger Tyler Reed: “Brands getting it right on Facebook“, “The Youth and Facebook“, “Facebook For Business: Central And Mobile” and the awesome documentary video on his company site Younique.

In several European countries Facebook is enjoying some spectacular growth. Today Ireland’s Electric News posted newly-released Facebook statistics revealing 131,000 Irish registered users, up a massive 125,000 since January 2007. In France Mashable.fr reported that there are now 430,000 French Facebook users. In the Netherlands Emerce discovered through Facebook Flyers there are now 110,000 Dutch users, up an ashtonishing 100,000 since end May 2007. Are Dutch users turning their back on Hyves (4 million users), plagued with bad programming and many outages?

Some other news snippets I found interesting: Social graph-iti by Economist.com, Mazda Design Challenge on Facebook (via AntyWeb) and viral strategy at graphing social.

To wrap it all up, I leave you with this funny video, called “The Facebook Skit” by Penn Masala, viewed over 3.5 million times on Youtube.
