Demi & Ashton Launch Social Media Campaign

Hubbies Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have already proven to be social media savvy and now they are using social media to gain awareness for child slavery.

Demi and Ashton launched their The DNA Foundation on January 25, 2010 and their aim is to eliminate child slavery, world wide. In an exclusive interview with Mashable, the famous Hollywood couple explains how they want to raise awareness about child slavery in Haiti now. And how they want to achieve just that.

Both Demi and Ashton are devoted Twitterers and you may remember the battle between CNN and Ashton in their race of getting 1 million followers. Now, the couples turn to social to raise awareness on child slavery and the “restavec” system in Haiti, where children are s sent by their parents to work for a host household as a domestic servant because the parents lack the resources required to support the child. Since most people believe that slavery is dead, it is going to take a lot of loud voices to spread the message and that is where social comes in.

Coming Wednesday, the United Nations discuss sending $11 billion in aid to the Haitian government. In the official press release, Ashton states:

“We call on donor governments, foundations and non-governmental organizations to demand that child slavery be banned as they fund the $11.5 billion that the Haitian government has requested.  We will work to educate all of the major donors and members of the United States Congress on this opportunity.”

The UN conference will be attended by many US congressmen and Demi and Ashton encourage everyone to turn to social to reach out to those congressmen by simply using Twitter @replies. The couple will post a list of attendees on their Facebook, Twitter and the official DNA website. Furthermore, they encourage people to tweet and contact Barack Obama about the issue. In doing so, they hope to generate buzz and awareness and ignite the restavec conversation.

I am convinced that Demi and Kutcher can increase the level of awareness around child slavery. Both of them have millions of followers on Twitter alone and the story on Mashable is already retweeted and talked about in the social atmosphere. However, I hope that in addition they can actually mobilize people to start spreading the word: so far I could not find many @replies to any of the congressmen and there is not # to easily find all the tweets on the matter. What do you think? Can the famous Hollywood actually start a small movement in just 6 days to the U.N. conference?
