How Francesco Totti’s Goal Celebration Selfie Goes Viral

Francesco Totti celebrated his equaliser against Lazio in modern style by grabbing a phone and taking a selfie: #TottiSelfie

With Roma down two goals, captain Totti scored twice to draw his team level, celebrating the second one by grabbing a smartphone and taking a selfie with Roma fans.

Totti had come up with the idea for a special celebration should he score a goal in the city derby against local Serie A rival Lazio, according to Sean Foley, who runs the club’s digital and social initiatives.

From there, the plan was simple: Plant an iPhone with goalkeepers coach Guido Nanni, who would be easy for Totti to find should he deliver a score.

Here’s how he did it:

Both World Cup winning Coach Marcello Lippi and legendary Italian defender Alessandro Nesta have praised Francesco Totti’s selfie in the Rome derby.

‘I thought it was fantastic,’ said Lippi in an interview with Radio2. ‘Another touch of genius by a genius player.’

Former Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta stated:

‘It was fun and even abroad it was perceived as a caper. He didn’t offend anyone. It’s just too bad that he had to score against Lazio, but that’s just me…’

One die-hard Roma fan liked Totti’s selfie that much, he decided to get a tattoo of it:

But there was alos so criticism, from Lazio president Claudio Lotito: ‘That selfie didn’t have anything to do with football.’

I guess the fact that Lazio gave away a 2-0 lead was the main reason why Lotito criticised Roma’s star player.

Totti’s selfie was not quite that unique. Last July, Dom Dwyerof of Sporting Kansas City (MLS) grabbed a phone from a nearby photographer and snapped a selfie of himself as well:

And here is Dwyerof’s selfie:

Remarkable was that he was promptly shown a yellow card, as Totti went unpunished by the referee.
