Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is through trial and error. As it turns out, it’s also a great way to start a business

New Book for Startups: Lean Analytic by Alistair Croll

Recently, I sat down with speaker, author and veteran entrepreneur Alistair Croll to discuss a new book he co-authored called Lean Analytic.

I review new and emerging technologies so I wanted to know more about the mechanics behind his data-enabled trial-and-error type of process.

The book describes how aspiring startups can find the information needed to test the market for their business idea first, before they invest a huge sum building it out.

During our recent conversation, Croll told me that: “Until you figure what you are selling to what market, your product is not this thing that you sell. It’s a tool you use to figure out what business you are in.” To do this, you essentially “figure out what the riskiest part of your business. Find a way to test that, then keep repeating so you can grow the business.”

Learnings from Eric Ries

Croll had plenty of time to utilize this Lean startup concept – popularized by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Eric Ries, during his time as a Year One Labs co-founder.

Silicon Valley entrepreneur, blogger and best-selling author Eric Ries pioneered the Lean Startup movement.

Eric and his partner Ben Yoskovitz provided funding and mentorship to 5 startups, and used that experience to formalize the process and theory behind Lean Analytics.

As it turned out, 3 of the companies in the startup accelerator went on to raise additional financing.

Video Interview with Alistair Croll

In this video interview from this year’s SXSW Interactive Festival, Croll tells me more about the Lean startup movement and examples of businesses that have used it successfully.
