Douglas Engelbart: The Inventor Of The Computer Mouse Is No More…

Douglas on Human Behavior
“The rate at which a person can mature is directly proportional to the embarrassment he can tolerate.”

On Future of Computing

“In 20 or 30 years, you’ll be able to hold in your hand as much computing knowledge as exists now in the whole city, or even the whole world.”

On Digital Revolution
“The digital revolution is far more significant than the invention of writing or even of printing.”

Douglas on naming his Invention as ‘Mouse’
“I don’t know why we call it a mouse. Sometimes I apologize. It started that way and we never did change it.”

The motto of Doug Engelbart Institute
“Boosting mankind’s capability for coping with complex, urgent problems.”

The thoughts that gave Douglas his Vision of Life
“I realized that I didn’t have any more goals than a steady job, getting married and living happily ever after,”
“How can my career maximize my contribution to mankind?”

On Augmenting Human Intellect
“By ‘augmenting human intellect’ we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble…”

On Inventing the Mouse – So Humble Thoughts
“It was no great shakes, the invention … It was just putting together things that were already known. So that’s how we got the first mouse…”

On his Growing up Years
“Growing up without a father, through the teenage years and such, I was always sort of different … Other people knew what they were doing, and had good guidance, and had enough money to do it. I was getting by, and trying. I never expected, ever, to be the same as anyone else…”

On Technology Now & Then
“Even way back then, we already had the concept of multiple windows … Any one application could manage multiple windows, and you could easily move objects, paragraphs, and words between them…”

On his Philanthropic Vision
“I remember being thrilled. Just the whole concept of helping people work and think that way just excited me…”

On Human’s tendency to follow one’s Vision

“Sometimes I reflect on how naive somebody has to be in order to get visions — and plug away at them — that ultimately proceed, and how many other people with visions that are as naive just fall off the cliff…”

Born in Portland, Oregon, Douglas Carl Engelbart was a permanent resident of Atherton, California. The world will remember him for his work and words forever.
