1. John Lewis “Monty’s Christmas”
“Monty’s Christmas” is the £1m sequel to last year’s “The Bear and the Hare”. Famous retail chain John Lewis released its latest seasonal ad last week on Twitter. The launch of the department store’s Christmas commercial has become something of a national event in the UK, since its humble beginnings in 2007. The Christmas advert tells the tale of a cute little boy Sam and his best friend called Monty, a CGI-penguin. This week’s number 1 accumulated at least 20 million views in just over a week on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
2. Sainsbury’s “Christmas is for sharing”
Sainsbury’s Christmas ad travels back a century to the trenches of World War I. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary truce between British and German soldiers. On Christmas Day 1914, the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, shared gifts and even played football together. The advert has garnered 5 million views on YouTube. 3. Amazon “Echo” & Parody
Last week, Amazon unveiled an unusual product, “Echo”, together with a four-minute video demonstration of its new cylindrical product. Amazon Echo is a $199 stand-alone smart speaker with a splash of Siri and no screen. Echo is the latest smart assistant you can talk to in addition to Apple’s Siri, Google Now & Microsoft’s Cortana. YouTube user Barry Mannifold “edited” the original video to incorporate his own take on Amazon Echo and released it on the same day. Result: Barry wins with 3.3M views versus Amazon’s 2.2M views!
4. Rockstar Games “Grand Theft Auto V”
This Monday, Rockstar Games released the official trailer for Grand Theft Auto V. The upcoming game is finally due to land on the PS4 and Xbox One on November 18 and on PC January 27, 2015. The next-gen version of the game is set in the fictional city of Los Santos and will introduce enhanced graphics, with finer texture details as well as new weather effects, wildlife and vegetation for a more realistic setting. Viewed 1.8 million times in 4 days.
5. Tesco “The Wigan Light Show”
Last but not least, another early Christmas advert in Wigan, this time by British supermarket Tesco with a spectacular light show. Tesco picked the town’s supermarket to star in its festive advert, after a local customer tweeted her disappointment last year when the store wasn’t crowned with a green Christmas hat. The event did not only attract 800 local residents, but also netizens who watched the video 1.7 million times on Facebook and YouTube.
