Viral Friday: Homemade Ford Balloons

This week’s Viral Friday #1 position goes to Ford with Homemade Ford Balloons. During last years Champions League final, Ford launched it’s new commercial. In the commercial several cars are flying through the air carried by balloons. Three guys from Auckland, New Zealand now try to get a real car airborn with the use of just 5.000 helium filled balloons. The runner up spot is for a capella group Straight No Chaser. The American group made this hilarious version of the classic ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Evil Eye Baby completes this week’s top 3. This cute baby shows its alter ego on command.

1. Homemade Ford Balloons

During last years Champions League final on May 23th Ford launched it’s new Mondeo commercial. In the clip several cars are floating through the air, carried by balloons. An article on Creativereview.co.uk explains which techniques were used to get the carbon cars airborne. According to a Scottish scientist you need 82.000 helium filled balloons to get a real Mondeo off the ground. Three guys from Auckland, New Zealand tried to prove him wrong by using just 5.000 helium filled balloons. They posted the video they made about a month ago, creating a fair amount of buzz (like The Ellen DeGeneres Show). An Australian news show investigated the story to find out if it is really possible to get a car airborne with helium filled balloons.

2. The 12 Days Of Christmas

American a capella-group ‘Straight No Chaser’ made this hilarious mashup of the classic ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Their performance in the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington (Indiana) on December 7th 1998 got 3.7 million views since it was posted on YouTube last year. And this year the video got posted on hundreds of blogs again.

3. Evil Eye Baby

Many internet users got touched by cute baby’s and their contagious laughing. Legendary baby’s with millions of views are Ethan and BlackOleg’s kid, with a stunning 31 million views! The ‘Evil Eye Baby’ now tries to take over their number one position. Have a look at this hilarious clip.

4. What Really Matters

Now the holidays are coming the American presidential candidates take the opportunity to wish their fellow Americans a merry Christmas. Hilary Clinton, John Edwards, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mike Huckabee each have their own Christmas video. Mike Huckabee’s clip seems to be the home of a subliminal message, according to The Huffington Post. The video has almost 1 million views.

5. The Life Of Homer Simpson

In 2006 Noah Kalina, a New York based photographer, got famous on the internet with his video ‘Everyday‘. On Januari 11th 2000 Kalina decided to take a picture of himself on a daily bases. 2.356 days later he showed the pictures in chronological order (and quickened) in a video. He uploaded the video to Vimeo on August 8th 2006 and about three weeks later he uploaded it to YouTube. Several people followed in his footsteps. And now the creators of The Simpsons made their own version.

6. Get A Mac Christmas 2007

TBWA\Media Arts Lab USA created this special Holiday edition of the Apple ‘Get A Mac’ commercial. In the, this time animated, video PC (John Hodgman) and Mac (Justin Long) together sing “Santa Claus Is Coming”. But in no time PC makes his own version of the song. (Source: Duncuns.tv)

7. Santa’s Helper

Online retailer Net-A-Porter came up with an ingenious way to generate traffic to their website this Christmas. On the viral campaign site Santa’s Helper spouses and/or girlfriends can create a personal message with a sexy blonde. In the message they can let their life partners know what present they would like to get for Christmas.

Net-A-Porter’s first viral marketing campaign, developed by Sugar (London), has over 47.000 visits after just a month. The Wall Street Journal, Vogue and several fashion blogs wrote about the Santa’s Helper campaign. The online retailer used several on- and offline channels to promote the viral campaign, such as e-mail marketing, online PR, paid search, in-th-box promotion, global offline PR, social networking (Facebook, YouTube) and car advertising.

8. Grand Opening Danscafé Burn

The Edegem (Antwerp, Belgium) based dance café Burn came up with a very original promotion stunt to get some attention for their grand opening last December 20th. The promo guy spreading flyers was on fire! The stunt was filmed with a mobile phone camera and has over 30.000 views on Liveleak. (Source: Mediabom)

10. Rock The Palace

Always wanted to be a rock star? Pisang Ambon gives you the chance with the interactive commercial ‘Rock the Palace‘. The commercial promotes Clipcaster.tv, developed by Brandbase. In the interactive commercial, in which the visitor plays the main part, we see a stage manager who is desperately looking for you. Once arrived on stage, where a lot of fans are waiting for you, the stage manager saves himself from the painful situation he is in with a phone call.

Clipcaster.tv is the first online Videoke in the world, a mix of video and karaoke. Users can record their karaoke efforts via their webcam and edit them with several special effects to create a funny video clip. (Source: Reclameweek, Buzzing Bees)
