Viral Friday: Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld

This weeks Viral Friday #1 position goes to Microsoft with Jerry & Bill. A beginning of a serie of ads to reintroduce Microsoft to the consumers. The runner up spot is for Super Mario Rescues The Princess. Mario finally overcomes his enemy and rescues the woman he has been fighting to save. Too bad the princess is not impressed by what she sees. John McCain Gets BarackRoll’d completes this week’s top 3.

1. Microsoft – Jerry & Bill

Microsoft tries to catch up with the popular get a Mac ads from Apple. According to Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President at Microsoft, the overall goal of this new series of ads is to inspire consumers and “tell the story of how Windows enables a billion people around the globe to do more with their lives today.” This first phase, he says, “is designed to engage consumers and spark a new conversation about Windows – a conversation that will evolve as the campaign progresses, but will always be marked by humor and humanity.” (source)

In the blogosphere, the ad created enormous buzz. Mainly because of the budget for the entire campaign ($300 million dollar) and the unclear message in this first kickoff ad. Later this month, Microsoft will come with new spots.

2. Super Mario Rescues The Princess

While the video itself doesn’t look like such a big deal, the whole idea behind the video is. This video is the first video from a animated series of Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, and is specially created for Google. The video will be spread through the Google Adsense advertising system and has numerous of option for advertisement, such as “preroll” ads, banners at the bottom of the video clip or a “brought to you by” note at the beginning. The first series are completely owned by Burger King. (Source)

3. John McCain Gets BarackRoll’d

Rick Rolling has become a worldwide internet phenomenon. Especially when Youtube April fooled all her users by directing the featured videos on the first of April to Rick Astleys’ Never Gonna Give You Up movie.

In this video, McCain is being Barackroll’d, a verb that points to the Rick Rolling phenomenon.

4. Skype Laughter Chain

Collaborative viral initiatives are rare, but when they surface the campaigns are highly successful. Their secret: They are simple, short (10-15 sec), easily uploaded (via webcam, video camera or mobile phone) and universal! Like football, passing along an e-mail message, video message in a bottle or heart, an inspirational hand message, cheering or like Skype’s new campaign laughter, along with yawning one of the most basic and contagious human phenomena.

5. Go Miniman Go

A global pop culture icon turned 30 and is celebrating a list of accomplishments and adventures that would overwhelm and astonish any self-described overachiever.

The LEGO minifigure was first manufactured and packed into a LEGO set the morning of August 25, 1978. Children of all ages and LEGO employees around the world commemorated the milestone by kicking off Go Miniman Go!, a movement that aims to inspire generations of LEGO children to reconnectwith the adventures their minifigures enabled them to live through creative, constructive LEGO play.
