Viral Friday: What’s In The Box?

Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 5 most popular viral videos, commercials, games or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.
ViralFriday

This weeks Viral Friday #1 position goes to What’s In The Box?. Exactly two weeks ago Tim Smit uploaded the video “What’s in the Box?”, which he made for a short film festival, to YouTube. If he could only imagine what was going to happen next! The runner up spot is for Current TV with Twouble With Twitters. SuperNews is a short form, animated sketch series, which airs on Current TV. To kick off the season premiere SuperNews! released a sneak peak which takes aim at the hugely popular microblogging site Twitter. Flight Attendant Doing Raps completes this week’s top 3. Instead of reading out the regular boring announcement to the passengers, Southwest Airlines flight attendant David Holmes decided to rap the safety instructions over the plane’s speakers.

Do you want to see this week’s list from 1 to 5? Go on then, and have a look! We’d like to hear your opinion about the virals. Have fun!

1. What’s In The Box?

Exactly two weeks ago Timacious uploaded the video “What’s in the Box?” to YouTube. If he could only imagine what was going to happen next! The video, which features many Half-Life 2 (the best game ever) effects and so the rumor machine got going; many believed the video was a viral marketing ad for Half-Life 2: Episode 3. But none of this was true (unfortunately!). The video was made by Natural Science students Tim Smit and Thibeaut Niels. They came up with the idea for the film in 2006 but only started producing in 2008. Although the film is far from finished, they decided to submit a 9 minute short for the GoShort film festival. Even Hollywood is impressed with Tim’s short; among others 20th Century Fox gave him a call. The official site for the short film seems to indicate the story isn’t finished yet, and we honestly cannot wait to see what happens next.

2. Twouble With Twitters

SuperNews is a short form, animated sketch series, which airs on Current TV. The show is famous for turning headlines and pop culture into biting hilarity. To kick off the season premiere SuperNews! released a promo and a four-minute teaser. The sneak peak, entitled SuperNews! Twouble with Twitters, takes aim at the hugely popular microblogging site Twitter.com, which unique visitors increased 1,382 percent last year. According to creator Josh Faure-Brac, the idea for the Twitter cartoon developed because “…last fall I started hearing a lot of co-workers talk about Twitter. I signed up for an account and soon realized I HAD to make a cartoon about it.”

3. Flight Attendant Doing Raps

Instead of reading out the regular boring announcement to the passengers, Southwest Airlines flight attendant David Holmes decided to rap the safety instructions over the plane’s speakers. Holmes was discovered by a passenger who recorded his rap with her cell phone, and then told him she was putting it on YouTube. His rap of the pre-flight safety instructions has become a viral sensation, after CNN, Yahoo! News, The Wall Street Journal, 6ABC, Central Florida News and Digg picked up the story.
Last week Paul already wrote about this rapping flight attendant, read his full story on ViralBlog.

4. Kill Bill Part 1 & 2, In One Minute, In One Take

Last week we saw the Forrest Gump movie in one minute. This week the makers of that Forrest Gump movie, the University of York Filmmaking Society, thought it would be nice to watch the Kill Bill movies in one minute as well. The clip is devised, directed, and edited by Joe Burgess, Rocco Sulkin and Will Tribble. The complete credits for the short are on the YouTube page.

5. Numa Numa Is Back

In 2004 Gary Brolsma became The Numa Numa Guy and to date more than 700 million people have watched his awkward video. Hoping to tie his lovable lip-syncing magic to a big brand, The Martin Agency tapped him to produce “Numa Numa Guy with GEICO“, an amateur-style video where he sings Somebody’s Watchin’ Me while GEICO‘s trademark gecko dances behind him.
