PSY Gangnam Style: Viral Culthit Of 2012?
Viral culthit Gangnam Style is an uncool video clip that seems to be on steroids. The video clip, created by the unknown artist and rapper PSY, was watched over 62 million times in 6 weeks and is growing by 4 million views a day.
Here you can learn how unknown South Korean artist Park Jai-Sang AKA PSY is topping Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga in the YouTube Top 100.
How great social video content can massively extend reach and relationships, and is fuelling record and ringtone sales…
After a 2 year break, the 34 years old PSY is finally coming back with his 6th album PSY6ç². To break through the clutter, PSY realized that he needed to create a real viral culthit.
The song Gangnam Style was composed solely by PSY himself, from lyrics to choreography. PSY who stars in the culhit video clip himself, went really viral after a while.
When PSY was asked about the secret ingredient of this success, he answered: “My goal in this music video was to look uncool until the end. And I achieved it”.
I must admit two thumbs up for PSY. He really understood that content is king and distribution is queen. He showed guts and is now earning global glory.
PSY’s clip is now #2 in the YouTube Top 100 with over 62 million views and more than 600.000 likes.
It would not surprise me if the Gangnam Style viral would top Carly Rae Jepsen, the current #1 in the YouTube 100 with over 217 million views.
And I do hope that more brands and entertainment companies will understand that content can be king in the post-digital revolution era in which you can still buy media, but you can no longer buy attention and respect. You have to earn them.
If you are a fan, you can join PSY on Facebook or buy his album in the iTunes store.
South Korean singer and rapper PSY became an international sensation with the outrageously silly video for his 2012 hit “Gangnam Style.” The artist is a graduate of Boston University and Berklee College of Music and began his music career in 2001 with the album PSY from the PSYcho World!
The album’s in-your-face lyrics connected with Korean teens but concerned civil groups, causing PSY to pay fines and restrict sales to adults only. He capitalized on the controversy by releasing two more albums, Sa 2 and 3 PSY, a year later, which earned song writing accolades at the 2004 SBS and Seoul Music Awards.
Third album Sa Jib (Sa House) followed in 2006, along with more honours from the SBS Music Awards and M.net KM Music Festival. Aside from his regular recording and performing duties, PSY became a familiar face with appearances on Korean game shows like X-Man and talk shows like Golden Fishery, bringing his flashy style and offbeat charm to the masses.
Fifth album PSY Five arrived in 2010 as the artist signed to YG Entertainment, one of Korea’s largest talent agencies and record labels, and took home trophies from the Melon, Seoul, and M.net Asian Music Awards ceremonies.
PSY kicked off 2011 with Best Album honours from the 20th High1 Seoul Music Festival and by the following spring he joined the cast of the Korean televised talent competition ‘Superstar K’ as judge.
His fame reached international status in summer 2012 with the release of the album PSY’s Best 6th Part 1, propelled by the single “Gangnam Style,” which he immortalized in a video with campy choreography that simulated riding a horse.
Within a month of its release, the video racked up over 28 million hits on YouTube and inspired parody clips from all corners of the globe. In week 5, the culhit grew by 4 million views per day!
Now the video is a viral culthit and I believe it has the potential of hitting 200+ million views in 2012.
We expect many clones, parodies and maybe even some branded flashmobs to follow. Like this Nelly Furtado Gangnam Style parody, the #3 in last week’s Viral Friday.
Please tell our audience if you think that PSY will make it to the #1 position in the YouTube Top 100 eventually?
