Dopplr: For Smart Social Business Travelers
The brand name really gives me a web2.0 deja vu: Dopplr. It is a social service for business travelers. Dopplr lets you share your future travel plans privately with friends and colleagues.
The service then highlights coincidence, for example, telling you that three people you know will be in Paris when you will be there too. You can use Dopplr on your personal computer and mobile phone. It links with online calendars and social networks. They’ve also got a weblog.
The service has attracted a following among business travellers around the globe. Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia recently named Dopplr his “favorite non-wiki website” in The New York Times Sunday Magazine: “You put in your travel schedule and link to your friends. It allows you to see where everyone is. I love it.”
Dopplr is built by an international team with a passion for design, technology and travel. Dopplr was founded in 2007 by Lisa Sounio, CEO, Matt Biddulph CTO, Matt Jones, Design Director and Dan Gillmor.
Dopplr is backed by a premier international group of investors including Martin Varsavsky, Joichi Ito, Reid Hoffman and Saul Klein. Marko Ahtisaari is a founding investor.

Used it for a while in an early stage of the service. And then you get one of the biggest disadvantages for being an early adopter in a social network: No friends to share the service with.
I’m getting the feeling the service is getting more grown up and will reach a broader audience in the future.
@Matthijs
I think so too!
Can promise you one thing, I’m share holder in a new travel matching start-up. We will definately come up with something the travel sector has not seen before
Cheers
I’ve used Dopplr for a while and love it. It lets me find out when I’m in the same neighbourhood as friends and connects with my other location services (fireeagle and brightkite). It only needs a light touch, about once a week – it’s a great way of keeping track of where you’ve been.
I don’t get it: I always know where my real friends are, why should I use this application?
@ Ronald
Our company has +100.000 people, in over 50 countries. Dopplr enables me to see if co-workers from other agencies/ countries will be in London or New York at the same time I will be there.. Dopplr enables me to meet them.
It doesn’t have to be about the inner circle of real friends only, right?
Cheers
@Igor: right!
