‘Instagram’s Photo Maps Conquer The World’
Last week Instagram 3.0 was introduced for iPhone and Android. Newly designed user profiles, hashtag, location, and explore pages give the mobile social network a completely different look.
The most important new feature? A so-called “photo map” that adds every geotagged photo to a personalized interactive map of the world.
A great way to discover patterns in your feed? Not just that. Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom explains that by using the photo map, viewing photos that were uploaded at a certain location months ago becomes easy.
And yes, where scrolling to the beginning of your feed used to take hours, the photo map makes this a quick and efficient process.
Users can decide whether or not they want to add a photo to the map, and can remove these just as easily.
How Photo Maps work:
But what can this new feature mean for instamarketing? According to the Instagram team, photo maps give the story of your brand a new dimension.
News organizations can shed light on the locations of current events, while fashion brands can show collections on runways in Paris, Milan, or London during Fashion Week.
Followers are enabled to explore the history of a brand, based on location and time, and get acquainted with the story of a brand. This means that a brand can use the maps to connect with followers in a personal way.
Another possible function that is not yet available, is the mapping out of photos tagged by a certain brand related hashtag.
This would enable a brand to see where customers and fans are located, the demographics of a certain area, and the possible need for new stores in these areas. The wait is for an update that adds this function.
In the mean time, we will patiently wait for the first innovative Instagram marketing campaigns using the photo maps.
