Making A Difference Using New Technologies
Creating a platform where you get the opportunity to make that difference, is one way to do it. Last week the Nike GameChangers launched a campaign together with YouthNoise. An initiative by Nike to do something for the environment and Beat Gasoline.

Make teens aware of their environment and help them to Beat Gasoline by providing a platform where they can upload their own videos, make statements, fill out polls. Be involved and get other people involved. More and more brands are submitting themselves as being ‘green’ or would like to show their concerns for the environment or social surroundings.
But not only the environmental issues can benefit from social media or ‘new’ technologies to make people aware or try to make them care for it. We can also use new technologies to improve the environment or at least show our brand fans that we care and we can make that change. How? T-Mobile recently developed the free-of-charge “Green Perks” application brings customers green-oriented offers and promotions from advertisers.

This Mobilize initiative was originally designed to help consumers who would like to make more ‘eco-friendly choices in their daily lives‘. And let’s not forget about the political issues that are getting our attention. Over the past few weeks, thousands of Twitter users tinted their profile pictures green to show support for protesters in Iran.
Another initiative for charity for example, the UK-based Lovebox encourages charity-minded social network users to replace their current profile picture with one of its digital Lovebox icons and then make a donation to the charity it represents. MSN has used such an icon as well, by putting it on your profile, Microsoft would donate a small amount to charity for each message you were sending out.

So, can we make a difference? Yes we can! A lot of examples are out there and most of them are quite easy to implement, not only for environmental cause, but also for charity and political statements, social networking can be a powerful tool. Just be creative in how to become social within social.
