NASA In Social Space
A lot of brands are moving towards social marketing or are already active within social media. There are some brands you might expect to be present within social, like Adidas. And some brands at first may seem a bit awkward within the social space, like NASA. NASA is doing everything externally – not only with Web-facing portals, but also in our virtual worlds. Follow NASA at Twitter, become a member at their Facebook page and LinkedIn, they are all part of their communication skills in social space.
Internally NASA is using blogs, wikis, workspaces, and social networks interconnected with content, document and records management systems. There is even a NASA TV channel. It looks like they thought of everything.
When you come to think of it, it is not a complete surprise that a brand like NASA is moving and active within social. It may just be that the Generation Y kids are fully aware of the Web 2.0 and social networking possibilities and know exactly what they are doing. This generation is creating an ‘interconnected web of relationships’, they have been brought up with sharing ideas, content, and even their life stories. Therefore it makes it possible to uncover and share their expertise, they can solve problems and brings specific data out of hiding to solve problems or give new insights for specific projects. It may even help to earn attention of their peers.
It is important to take notice of the Generation Y kids. As a brand, if you want to be part of the future, you cannot miss out in the social space. This Generation Y kids may not be part of your current target audience, but they will be in the near future. You’ve got to start to listen to them and make them part of your social media marketing program. Because the near future may even be tomorrow.
Corporate users like Booz Allen Hamilton together with NASA are already taking notice and are using social networks for example for new hires. Be at the right place to reach the right audience and don’t wait to start tomorrow with your social marketing strategy, but you better start today.
