Playboy Goes Augmented Reality

Playboy has added Augmented Reality to the cover of the current Dutch edition, showing semi-nude, partially animated clips of the three potential Playmate of the Year cover models.

Playboy has teamed up with Layar to create the AR steam on your smartphone window. For now, it’s just the Playboy Magazine cover coming to life through AR.

But good news gentlemen: it seems that naked women will come to life through all the centerfold pages in the near future! This could be the beginning of the AR pornography movement…

If you’re not familiar with  Augmented Reality: it brings static print and images to life with videos and more when you run your smartphone camera over the page.

To activate the augmented reality content in the latest Dutch Playboy edition, you must first download the Layar app on your smartphone.After you’ve launched the app, you need to point this to the cover image below:

The full edition also offers some slightly more innocent AR extras, including music playlists, moves and game trailers and competitions.

Playboy Netherlands editor in chief Patrick Goldsteen:

“As Playboy we have a great amount of content but are limited to the 114 pages of the magazine. With Layar we virtually have an unlimited amount of possibilities to publish extra content”

Layar CEO Quintin Schevernels:

“We are more than thrilled to be working together with Playboy to provide an engaging digital reader experience in print. The continued commitments of such internationally iconic magazine brands are marking the arrival of interactive print as a viable solution for print publishers.”

There’s a downside to this concept, apparently Apple doesn’t like this kind of content? Or am I doing something wrong here? here’s the message I recieve after scanning the cover:

My opinion?

The print industry is struggling these days due to decrease in subscriptions and the increase of customers that prefer to read digital content. So I really like the AR idea.

But I’m a bit surprised that an adult magazine like Playboy hasn’t done this, let’s say, 2 years ago. The porn industry is well know for its innovative and fast way of using new technologies. Seems like Playboy is behind the innovative curve?
