Viral Friday: U2 On YouTube

Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 5 most popular viral videos, commercials, games or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.
ViralFriday

This week’s Viral Friday #1 position goes to U2 On YouTube. Last Sunday U2 streamed their concert from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena live to YouTube. The runner up spot is for Grocery Store Musical. The people from Improv Everywhere did it again: they caused a scene. This time six undercover actors burst into song in a grocery store in Queens. Assassin’s Creed – Lineage (Part 1) completes this week’s top 3. Next month Assassin’s Creed II will launch, so Ubisoft released the first part (out of three) of the very impressive Assassin’s Creed Lineage films.

Do you want to see this week’s list from 1 to 5? Go on then, and have a look! We’d like to hear your opinion about the virals. Have fun!

Get our ViralBlog asset: the Viral Friday Widget! By default the widget shows you the latest Viral Friday, but it’ll also show you the seven most recent postings on ViralBlog.

1. U2 On YouTube

If you are a U2 fan you have probably already watched one of the biggest live-streamed events this year. Last Sunday 25th of October at 8.30 PM PT, U2 streamed their concert from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena live to YouTube. 16 countries were able to watch it live and during the show YouTube featured tweets from viewers. The show became a huge success and generated 10 million streams across 7 countries last Sunday and has since then been watched more than 1,3 million times on U2’s YouTube page.

2. Grocery Store Musical

The people from Improv Everywhere did it again: they caused a scene. This time six undercover actors burst into song in a grocery store in Queens. Within 9 days, the video got over 1 million views on YouTube alone. Improv Everywhere started in 2001 and created 85 scenes. For this ‘Grocery Store Musical’ Trident Layers used the New York based group’s popularity. The brand gave the actors full creative control and didn’t demand product placement, but at the end of the video the brand is shown, including links to their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

3. Assassin’s Creed – Lineage (Part 1)

Assassin’s Creed is a third person action-adventure video game by Ubisoft and was launched in 2007. Next month Assassin’s Creed II will launch, so Ubisoft released the first part (out of three) of the Assassin’s Creed Lineage films. Lineage is the prequel to the Assassin’s Creed II story, revealing the machinations of 15th century Italy through the actions of Ezio’s father, Giovanni. The game trailer got over 850,000 views on YouTube in just four days, probably being pushed on YouTube’s homepage, in eight countries, for a period of 24 hours helped getting these results.

4. PS3 VS Bravia TV

Sony Australia wanted to create some buzz, and thought the best way to do so was to slam a brand new out-of-the-box PS3 slim-line console into a fully-functional Sony Bravia 46-inch LCD TV at 80kmh (50mph). And to ensure the news got spread they invited Australia’s Gizmag technology blog to cover the event. The video directs viewers to sony.com.au/bonus, a campaign to give away 25,000 free PS3’s. Unfortunately the campaign only runs in Australia. The video of the crash test got over 1 million views since October 20.

5. Android 2.0 Official Video

After the recent exiting news about the introduction of Android 2.0, this video is showing all the new things you can do with Android. In an iPhone-guided-tour kind of way, the viewer is guided through the possibilities. On the developer website, you can find more information about the new features. Since last Monday, when the video was uploaded, it has already been viewed 388,035 times. Meanwhile, the rivalry between Android and iPhone continues across the web, resulting in videos like this. Still, ‘I came first’ doesn’t seem like a solid argument to me.
