Viral Friday: United State Of Pop 2009
Viral Friday is the weekly viral video chart of ViralBlog, showing the 5 most popular viral videos, commercials, games or user-generated videos, carefully selected and ranked by popularity, viral impact & spread.
This week’s Viral Friday #1 position goes to DJ Earworm: United State Of Pop 2009. Another year, another mashup. DJ Earworm created a mash up of the, according to Billboard, top 25 hits of 2009. The runner up spot is for The Most Useless Machine Ever. If you switch it on it switches itself off. It’s almost hypnotic to watch this machine in action, and so though 1.3 million others the past weeks. Travis Pastrana: Red Bull Jump completes this week’s top 3. On New Year’s eve Travis Pastrana jumped his rally car on the Red Bull New Year No Limits event and we can’t stop watching the video.
Do you want to see this week’s list from 1 to 5? Go on then, and have a look! We’d like to hear your opinion about the virals. Have fun!

1. DJ Earworm: United State Of Pop 2009
Another year, another mashup. DJ Earworm created a mash up of the top 25 hits of 2009, according to Billboard; “United State of Pop 2009“. Last year, the DJ created the same kind of mash up for the year 2008. This video generated almost 2 million views. This year’s version, containing Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce, got over 4.5 million views in just 1 week time on YouTube alone. So enjoy the best of 2009, in a little over 4 minutes, one more time!
2. The Most Useless Machine Ever
In April 2008 the “LeaveMeAloneBox” got quite some attention. Otherwise featureless, the box possessed a single switch on its side. When the switch was flipped, the lid of the box opened and a mechanical hand reached out, flipped off the switch, then retracted back inside the box. A nice DIY project thought a guy named “SaskView“, and he made himself one. He also created a video and posted building intructions on Instructables. His video, posted on YouTube on 28 December, became very popular the past week with over 1.3 million views, almost 1,200 comments and over 3,600 ratings on YouTube.
3. Travis Pastrana: Red Bull Jump
Only four days ago we wrote about Red Bull‘s clever event videos about Travis Pastrana’s car jump on New Year’s eve in Long Beach. At that time this video had 580,827 views on YouTube, and today that amount has more than doubled; the video got over 1.6 million views in just one week.
4. JibJab: Never A Year Like ’09
2009 was a moving year, at least so the folks at JibJab like to think. To get that message across, they created a 2 minute animated video with all of 09’s highs and lows. Of course the video is accompanied by a happy, bouncy tune (The Entertainer) so all the lows won’t hit you that hard. The JibJab brothers became famous in 2004 with “This Land“, a video about the US presidential elections and also appeared in previous Viral Friday editions. The ’09 video got almost 1 million views since 28 December.
5. Google Nexus One
This video introduces the Google’s smartphone and shows the features of this new phone, like most videos do that introduce a new phone. Critics say that this phone has some more advanced technical aspects, but is not a core shaker: it has no new features that the competition lacks so the only reason to buy this one would be that the features are more advanced than with other smartphones. At least the video looks nice: it’s been viewed 771,903 times since last Monday.
